First baseman Allen Craig wore a boot on his left foot and used crutches to navigate the clubhouse after the Cardinals beat the Reds 5-4 in 16 innings Wednesday.
The team's RBI leader is returning to St. Louis today for an MRI scan on his foot which he injured in the fourth inning. Matt Adams replaced Craig and after making outs in his first three at-bats Adams hit solo homers in the 14th and 16th innings — the latter proving to be the game-winner.
X-rays taken at Great American Ball Park were inconclusive and Craig was diagnosed with a foot sprain.
He said the top of his foot was still sore after the game and manager Mike Matheny conceded that “any news where we’re sending Allen Craig away from us isn’t good news.”
