Miamiherald.com ''Coming back is definitely an option I'm thinking about,'' said Alonso, 22, who hit .370 with 24 home runs and 72 RBI and led UM to the College World Series in June. ``If we can't get this thing resolved, I'll be very happy to come back to Miami, break some records and go back to Omaha and finish the job. I always said if worse comes to worse, I'm going back to school.'' I almost wouldn't be surprised if the Reds drafted Yonder Alonso knowing they couldn't sign him just so they could take their chances next year with a better crop of talent. I personally know nothing about next years possible draft class, but after reading about the draft compensation for not signing players I think its possible that they drafted Alonso knowing in the back of their minds what they get next year if they couldn't agree to terms. Baseball America: Teams that fail to sign a first-round pick no longer receive an extra pick after the first round as compensation, but instead a virtually identical pick the following year; for example, a team that fails to sign the No. 5 pick one year will receive the No. 6 pick the next, rather than one in the 30s or 40s. The same compensation also now exists for unsigned second-round picks, while a team that fails to sign a third-round pick will receive a sandwich pick between the third and fourth rounds. So next year the Reds would get the 8th overall plus what ever they get after this season. Is it a stretch to think they did that? Sure, but is it actually that bad of an idea? I'm not so sure it is.
