With consecutive off days making an eighth reliever a luxury and Ty Wigginton facing a possible stint on the disabled list, the Rockies are expected to add a position player before Friday’s series against the Pirates. Utilityman Alfredo Amezaga was scratched from tonight’s Triple-A game, making him a leading candidate to join the Rockies. Amezaga was slowed in spring training with leg injuries, but began to round into shape in late March. When he’s healthy, he’s capable of playing all outfield positions and everywhere in the infield but first base. Amezaga is hitting .364 with the Sky Sox. He was one of the National League’s most versatile players with the Marlins for several seasons, but hasn’t played in the big leagues in nearly two years because of a knee injury. The Rockies signed him to a minor-league deal over the winter after several strong workouts.
