Recently, BSN’s Brandon McClintock and myself put together a list of potential starting pitching options for the A’s as the July 31st trade deadline approaches – but this time, let’s talk about middle infield help.
There’s no doubt that the play of Jed Lowrie has been a highlight of the A’s offense all season long – he’s hitting over .300 and has managed to stay healthy enough to play in 75 of the team’s 82 games thus far in 2013.
He isn’t the problem – but the tandem of Eric Sogard and Adam Rosales is an area in which the A’s can (and should) improve to further strengthen their postseason aspirations.
Two days ago, a piece on FanGraphs titled The Most Obvious Trade That Needs to Happen was published, putting together a very strong case for the A’s to bring in Chase Utley from the Phillies by the July 31st trade deadline.
Some stats cited in the piece:
Among second baseman with at least 200 plate appearances, Utley’s 120 wRC+ ranks 10th, just behind Dustin Pedroia (124) and ahead

Following Thursday’s acquisition of infielder John McDonald from Cleveland, the Phillies made room on their active big league roster by demoting infielder Freddy Galvis to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
McDonald, a veteran of 15 major league seasons, has a career .235 batting average and a .605 career OPS mark. The 38-year-old posted a ...

One of the most raved about prospects in the Phillies system is 17-year-old Carlos Tocci. Praised for his superior defense and excellent quickness along with an ability to hit to all fields, the Venezuelan born outfielder opened the season as the youngest player in Lakewood BlueClaws history in the Class A South Atlantic League.
Tocci was signed by...
From all throughout the Phillies’ developmental ranks, here’s our weekly rundown of top performers and those players that have struggled recently.
Triple A Lehigh Valley IronPigs-
Outfielder Darin Ruf has picked up the production with his batting average of late, but has displayed minimal power during that stretch. The 26-year-old righty hitting slugger is batting...
The Phillies players with the largest-dollar contracts in Phillies history have not been their top-dollar selves this season. And now they are being asked to sit. First baseman Ryan Howard sat out the Phillies' Friday and Saturday contests in Los Angeles. Cole Hamels will be next: the left-hander will be...
The Phillies saw Puig up close (AP)
This weekend was mostly unfortunate for the Phillies outside of their 16-run barrage on Friday night, which happened to be the only time this season the team has eclipsed 10 runs in game.
-Yaisel Puig certainly looks like the real deal. And it’s a damn shame he ripped on the Phils all weekend, although we’re seeing history in the...
Domonic Brown, Ben Revere, Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels, Jon Pettibone. If you're on this list, you're sticking around, at least if I were the GM. If you're named Galvis, Hernandez, Ruf, or Asche, prepare to be here a month from now. Everybody else, buckle up. The Philadelphia Phillies are 9.5...
There was a time when the Philadelphia Phillies were the gold standard in baseball and believe it or not, it was not that long ago. From 2007-2011, they made the playoffs every year and even made it to the World Series twice, winning it in 2008 against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Their best regular season in that span was 2011, when they finished 102-60, but were defeated by the underdog...
Carlos Zambrano takes to the mound for the fourth time as a member of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs Friday night as he fights for a spot in the Phillies rotation. The start comes against one of the better hitting teams in the International League.
The Red Sox could eventually kick the tires on Michael Young. They just haven’t done so yet.
The New York Post reported that the Red Sox would be interested in trading for Young if the Phillies made him available, adding that a source reportedly said, “They want him badly.” But according to WEEI.com, the Red Sox have not engaged in “a single conversation” with the Phillies...
Right-handed pitcher Carlos Zambrano left the Triple-A game today after two innings because of “serious” pain in his right shoulder. Ruben Amaro Jr. says that they will “continue to evaluate him” for the Phillies. Amaro mentioned that he would like to see him as a starter, but that bullpen work...
Jimmy Rollins watches the season fly away A walk off win always hurts. Last night, the Phillies were on the losing end of one of those against the Dodgers, putting them down 2-1 in the four game series. Trying to leave SoCal with a series split, Kyle Kendrick took the...

The Phillies will look to John Lannan to stop Yasiel Puig and the Dodgers tonight, who have won six in a row. Last night, Puig won the game for them with a 2-RBI single...
The Phillies rebounded from a tough loss yesterday by absolutely demolishing Los Angeles' pitching staff in support of John Lannan Friday, managing 21 hits in a 16-1 win. Chris Capuano, who had pitched 11 scoreless innings stretching back to his last two starts, didn't look sharp at all out of...
Miscues cost the Dodgers in the ninth inning and gave the Phillies a chance. At the very least, it erased a potential loss for Cliff Lee, who was two outs away from having one mistake ruin an otherwise solid outing. The Phillies tied the game in dramatic fashion with the...
