Brandon Phillips is a man…if the Pirates didn’t know that before, they definitely learned it in last night’s 5-3 loss to the Reds. Jared Hughes didn’t call Phillips “boy” and now that the two have squashed their beef, who cares…maybe Phillips shouldn’t have thrown the ball back to the mound after he got plunked. Either way, it looked like Phillips was using that “racial slur” as some kind of motivation last night because he went off on the Bucs. Even though it was a wild pitch-Fort error combo that allowed Phillips to score the deciding run in the second, Phillips got the Reds off and running by driving in Cincy’s first 2 runs – a leadoff solo homer in the first and a RBI double in the second that gave the Reds the only lead they needed. That’s really all there is to talk about with this one…even we can’t figure out why we’re still watching – probably because there’s nothing on Tuesday nights (and don’t say Sons of Anarchy). The Bucs put up 11 hits, only struck

Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips has accused an unidentified Pittsburgh Pirates player of making racist comments towards him during a game Monday.

Brandon Phillips accuses Pirates of racism

This came to my attention this morning after reading a piece on Getting Blanked by Dustin Parkes, where he noted that Brandon Phillips of the Reds accused a mystery Pirate of racism during Monday's game between the two teams. After the game, Phillips tweeted this out: #RealTalk... Not really surprised by what I heard come outta another player's mouth tonite but...

Blaze get routed by Nuts, still lead playoff series 2-1

Monday's Reds game went 14 innings and lasted over five hours. Though their game took about half the time, the Blaze players probably felt like their game was just as long as they got whooped by the Nuts 12-1 in the third game of the best-of-five series. Modesto was in survival mode and did have the advantage of throwing Major League pitcher Jorge De La Rosa on the mound...

Is Reds' Aroldis Chapman the Best Closer in the MLB?

Joe Robbins/Getty ImagesAroldis Chapman has had an unbelievable season for a closer. He has gone 5-5 with a miniscule 1.60 ERA and 119 strikeouts. And, he has only pitched 67.2 innings. His strikeouts-per-nine-innings is 15.8. That would mean that if he were to start, he would strike out more than half the batters he would face if he went the distance.Chapman has established himself...

Reds Win in 14 Innings

The Reds dodge some extra-inning bullets and won a fourteen-inning thriller by a score of 3-2 over the Pirates last night at Great American Ball Park. Ryan Ludwick ended the game with a walk-off infield single. It was the fourth consecutive game that manager Dusty Baker gave the start in center field to Chris Heisey over the slumping Drew Stubbs. Heisey homered and his now hitting .287.

Reds squeeze out tight win, sweep Pirates

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Homer Bailey pitched seven solid innings and the Cincinnati Reds came up with just enough offense to squeeze out a 2-1 win over Pittsburgh on Wednesday night for a three-game sweep of the Pirates. The Reds (87-57) scored both of their runs on outs while moving 30 games over .500 for the first time since they were 96-66 on Oct. 3, 1999. They widened their lead...

Reds 4, Pirates 3(14)

Ryan Ludwick drove in the winning run with a two-out infield single in the 14th inning, lifting the Cincinnati Reds to a marathon 4-3 victory Monday night that handed the fading Pittsburgh Pirates their fourth straight loss. Rick VandenHurk (0-1), who was called up before the game, started the 14th and gave up a single by Devin Mesoraco. Brandon Phillips reached when the Pirates...

2012 MLB Postseason Preview: 5 Reasons Why the Cincinnati Reds Could Sneak Up as World Series Champions

If my life depended on picking the 2012 World Series winner I’d be dead yesterday. I seriously have no clue which team looks like the front-runner to win the World Series. Baseball is usually good in that respect – there’s never really ever a clear cut team like the Miami Heat, etc. So as I was perusing the league this weekend, I did a double take at the Cincinnati Reds. The...

Pirates: Hughes made no racial comment

The Pittsburgh Pirates want to make it clear once and for all -- Pirates reliever Jared Hughes did not make a racial comment toward Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips. The issue flared anew Wednesday after Phillips and Hughes seemingly had made peace during a cell-phone conversation that took place after Phillips said an unnamed Pirates player had said something racist...

Free fall reaches five

The Pirates fell again Tuesday night, this time in a more non-descript fashion…but still close enough to be frustrating. A couple mistakes in the field did them in as the Reds prevailed 5-3. Kevin Correia wasn’t too bad, although he allowed a homer to Brandon Phillips on a total meatball for the first pitch of the game. The Phillips homer tied the game at one, since Alex Presley...
