On Saturday, April 20, the Pittsburgh Pirates will be giving out an Andrew McCutcheon bobblehead — referred to as “Clutch Bobblehead” in a nod to McCutcheon’s nickname — to the first 25,000 fans through the gates at PNC Park for the team’s game against the Atlanta Braves. The Andrew McCutcheon bobblehead features Rawlings Gold Glove and Louisville Silver Slugger awards the Pirates superstar center fielder won last season and as is often the case, will be a prized collectible when the items begin showing up on eBay about 5 minutes after they are handed out. To promote the event, McCutcheon performed a little improvisational bobbleheading to demonstrate what in fact a bobblehead does. Which is bobble its head. Which McCutcheon did in a synchronized display of head-bobbling. Via Eye on Baseball: Ha. That’s awesome. He reminds me of Katharine Hepburn. In her later years, of course. And yes, that was a terrible joke. TweetThe post Andrew McCutcheon bobbles his head while holding his bob...

First Pitch: Gerrit Cole or Jameson Taillon? Who is Better?

Has Jameson Taillon passed Gerrit Cole? Spoiler alert: Before I begin, I’m not going to answer the question of which prospect between Gerrit Cole or Jameson Taillon is better. I think that no matter which side you pick, you’re going to be splitting hairs. I’ll also take the cheap way out, and point out that it’s a good problem to have to debate which top pitching prospect...

Atlanta Braves Sign Nick Weglarz To Minor League Deal

MLB News: On Friday the Atlanta Braves signed outfielder Nick Weglarz to a minor league deal. While it is not known where he will be assigned, we are assuming that it will be Triple-A Gwinnett. The one-time solid prospect who started his career at the age of 17 had fallen out of favor with the Cleveland Indians and was in camp with the Tampa Bay Rays this spring. Once displaying...

Game 15: Braves 6 Pirates 4

For almost the entire night, the Pirates had to play catch up in this game against the Braves. For most of the game, they did just that. BJ Upton lead the game off with a home run, the Pirates tied it on a sac fly. After the Pirates took a 2-1 lead on a long Russell Martin home run, the Braves took a 3-2 lead on a Chris Johnson homer. The Pirates tied the game back up on a moster...

Pirates Notebook: Top of the Lineup Heating Up

Wins are for the most part an antiquated statistic in baseball, but sometimes a win can carry a bit of significance. A.J. Burnett got his first one of the 2013 campaign Wednesday night at PNC Park, but that was not what people will remember about the game. Burnett not only got strikeout No. 2,000 for his career, he flirted with perfection and took a no-hitter into the seventh inning...

Prospect Trends: Some Fast Starts for West Virginia Hitters

Allie’s fast start has stirred much talk The season’s first two weeks have produced some noteworthy performances in the Pirates’ farm system, both good and bad. It’s way too early to start drawing any conclusions from these performances, but it’s not too early to scope out some players who’ll be interesting to follow closely, either with enthusiasm or concern. The biggest...

McDonald was tagged for eight runs in 1 2/3 innings on Monday in a loss to St. Louis...

Gaby’s Pirates end Maholm’s scoreless streak

Paul Maholm was the only starting pitcher in Major League Baseball to have not given up a run before tonight’s game.  The Pirates hadn’t been over .500 yet this season.  The Braves hadn’t lost 2 games in a row yet this season.  All of that changed with tonight’s 3-1 win. A more confident James McDonald…

Wilson Ramos and Justin Upton tie for the best homer pimp of the week. —– Evan Gattis’ first MLB hit, homer, and bat flip —– So yeah … that happened. Anthony Rizzo came close to hitting it into the water… …Carlos Gonzalez did.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Atlanta Braves – Game 15

All I have to say is A.J. Burnett. The guy is a freaking legend.  A folk hero.  If the Pirates manage to turn it around this season it’s in large part due to the leadership of A.J. Burnett.  He is that big of an acquisition in my opinion. The Braves are in town for four…
