As we approach the latter stages of the MLB regular season, individual players’ statistics start to take shape and we can begin really gauging what type of campaign they are putting together. I did this yesterday when analyzing the top 8 current contenders for NL MVP. The man who came out #1 on that list also happens to be the hottest player in all of baseball. And he just so happens to play for one of the Pittsburgh Pirates, one of the best surprise stories of the year. Pittsburgh Pirates Catching Great, George Gibson

George Gibson was a durable catcher for the Pirates from 1905 until 1916, a stellar defensive player that handled a Pirates pitching staff full of star hurlers for twelve seasons. Born on July 22,1880 in London,Ontario,Canada, Gibson made it to the majors on the strength of his defense, though he turned himself into a serviceable, bottom of the order, hitter with hard work and extra...

This Date in Pirates History: July 21

We have two former Pittsburgh Pirates players born on this date and one trade from nine years ago to discuss. In his Jolly Roger Rewind, John Fredland covers another game from the improbable 1997 season. The Trade On this date in 2003, the Pirates traded closer Mike Williams to the Philadelphia Phillies for minor league pitcher Frank Brooks. Williams was in his second tour with the...

Marlins try to bounce back behind Zambrano

While arguably no one's been hotter than Andrew McCutchen of late, the Pittsburgh Pirates' Neil Walker and Pedro Alvarez are also becoming of some well-deserved acclaim. Winner of 14 of 19, Pittsburgh looks to keep things going Saturday night in the second of three games with the visiting Miami Marlins. Sitting one-half game behind Cincinnati in the NL Central, Pittsburgh...

Walking to victory

The Pirates got another great home start from A.J. Burnett on Saturday, and took advantage of some Miami gifts to win their fourth straight game and go to 13 over .500. Burnett was not dominant (8 hits and only 3 K’s) but did a wonderful job going 7.2 innings while allowing just one run on a solo homer. A.J. was able to get the outs when he needed them and also gave the bullpen...

Friday night fireworks

The Pirates pulled off yet another comeback victory in front of yet another great crowd on Friday night, opening this weekend’s series in style with a 4-3 win over the Miami Marlins. Kevin Correia turned in a pretty typical outing. He was hit hard early on (two runs in the first, including a Jose Reyes leadoff bomb) and it seemed like he’d be in some serious trouble, but then...
