Chris Nelson hit a two-run homer off Felix Hernandez and the Los Angeles Angels ruined Eric Wedge's return to the dugout with a 2-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Friday night. Wedge managed the Mariners for the first time since he had a mild stroke a month ago. He acknowledged being anxious about getting back on the bench and called his ailment ''a heads up.'' Garrett Richards (4-5) allowed four hits in 7 1-3 innings and two relievers finished the five-hitter for Los Angeles. Nelson snapped an 0-for-17 slide when he connected in the second for his third homer. Josh Hamilton scored on Nelson's long ball after leading off the inning with a single, and it was the only time Hernandez (12-7) was touched all night. The biggest problem for Hernandez was the gem Richards was tossing on the other side. Richards (4-5) struck out four and walked two, but was forced out of the game after taking a liner off his right forearm. The right-hander had thrown just 8...

Looking back: Lessons learned from the Mariners road trip

What can the M’s Learn? There were two 9th-inning losses, but the Mariners finished the 9-game road trip with a 5-4 record and two series wins over divisional opponents. In the dog days of summer, this is known as treading water, but for the M’s, the well is pretty much dry — being 12 games back of the second wild card. So, it is time to assess what Seattle has moving forward...

Mariners Prospects: Taking a look at the “other guys”

Now who’s top dog? Entering this season the Mariner’s had one of the most hyped farm systems in baseball. But with names like Mike Zunino, Nick Franklin and Brad Miller finding themselves in the Big Leagues, there’s a chance the talent is drying up. Luckily that’s not the case. Seattle’s top prospects may be moving up, but there’s still plenty of other big names to be...

Los Angeles Angels – Weekly Wrap

LA Angels (@Angels) After losing three of four to the Yankees and just barely avoiding being swept by the Astros, the Angels’ season is more about finding usable pieces for 2014 than it is about competing in 2013. The Angels made a couple of minor moves Friday afternoon, designating Billy Buckner for assignment and recalling right-handed reliever Cory Rasmus to take his place...

Angels place RHP Kevin Jepsen on 15-day DL

The Los Angeles Angels have placed reliever Kevin Jepsen on the 15-day disabled list after he had surgery to remove his appendix. Jepsen had surgery Saturday in Seattle. The Angels also recalled outfielder Collin Cowgill from Triple-A Salt Lake City. Angels manager Mike Scioscia said the operation will keep Jepsen sidelined for four to six weeks but added he doesn't realistically...

Mariners mum on Zduriencik's future

The Seattle Mariners, in the midst of a fourth consecutive losing season, are remaining mum on the future of general manager Jack Zduriencik. Zduriencik has one winning season in five years as the Seattle GM, and his job security was the subject of multiple news reports this week. Mariners club president Chuck Armstrong told Ryan Divish of the Tacoma News Tribune that Zduriencik...

How Much Would You Pay for One Year of Mike Trout?

Recently, I was asked what I think turns out to be a pretty interesting thought experiment: if Mike Trout was released by the Angels and became a free agent, but decided he did not want to sign long term with any other team and simply preferred to go year to year instead, where would the […]

King Felix Proof That Wins Shouldn’t Decide Cy Young

Felix Hernandez has been steadily dominant for long enough now that most baseball fans have become accustomed to it. However, if you took a quick look at his win/loss record the last few seasons, you’d never know it.  In his brilliant Cy Young campaign in 2010, Felix put up an underwhelming 13-12 record. He followed this by posting a 14-14 record the next year and a 13-9 mark...

Report: Torii Hunter and Albert Pujols nearly got into fight last season

Things haven't exactly gone as the Los Angeles Angels hoped they would over the past couple of seasons. The high price Angels have failed to put together a contending team despite signing several players to big time contracts and part of the reason might be because of a lack of team chemistry. One of the players who was signed to a massive deal and has failed to live up to expectations...

Angels' tense times nearly included Pujols, Hunter fight in 2012

The two-year downhill toboggan run of owner Arte Moreno's broken franchise has created a suffocatingly tense atmosphere throughout the organization best illustrated by a team meeting last August in which All-Star Torii Hunter had to be physically restrained from punching out $240 million man Albert Pujols. The meeting details of which were provided to CBSSports.com by several...

Angels continue spiral, drop third straight to Cleveland

It took the Angels 14 innings to score one run Tuesday. It took them just nine to do the same Wednesday. So there is that. As far as bright sides that’s about the best the Angels can muster these days. Another day came and went Wednesday and another loss was etched onto their ledger of despair — the Cleveland Indians completing a three-game sweep with a 3-1 victory to send...
