Angels' Blanton pitches 2 innings before rainout

Associated Press  |  Last updated March 08, 2013
Joe Blanton got two innings of work in Friday before the Los Angeles Angels and Arizona Diamondbacks were rained out with the score 1-1 in the bottom of third. Pitching in rain, Blanton made his second spring training start and allowed one run and two hits in two innings. ''His bread and butter is his two-seam fastball, and it looked real good,'' Angels catcher Hank Conger said. ''He was mixing in a good changeup, and his fastball was firing.'' Aaron Hill homered in the first. It was Hill's first. Angels manager Mike Scioscia pulled many of his regulars when he revised his lineup about an hour before the start. Arizona manager Kirk Gibson opted for reliever Brad Ziegler to start instead of Randall Delgado, who had been scheduled. ''Delgado wasn't ready, so we hurried up and got Ziegler ready like it was a game,'' Gibson said. ''You don't want to send him out there in this kind of weather, but sometimes you have to do it.'' Ziegler pitched one inning and gave up two runs and a run. Delgado went 1 2-3 innings, also allowing two hits. ''I felt fine,'' Delgado said. ''It was cold and rainy, but those are the kind of game conditions you have to get used to.'' NOTES: Gibson said OF Tony Campana's left hand was wrapped after taking eight stitches following Thursday's game, when he was spiked. Campana is expected to miss about a week. ''I'd think the hardest thing for him to do would be to hit,'' Gibson said. ... Gibson said SS Didi Gregorius is throwing from about 75 feet and will need to progress to 120 feet. Gregorius, Arizona's starting DH on Friday, strained the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow while training for the World Baseball Classic and is questionable for opening day.
