PLAYERS:
Matt Oye
27-year old Angels pitching prospect Matt Oye (pronounced Oy-yay) provided an oye (pronounced oy) during the Angels-Indians spring training game on Wednesday. When Oye entered the game in the seventh inning, someone alerted home plate umpire Tim McClelland to Oye having a white fingernail on his pitching hand.
We’re not sure if Oye was working a side job painting before entering the game or if he dabbles in fingernail polish (I’m not judging), but McClelland wasn’t having it. He made an Angels trainer come out and blacken Oye’s fingernail with a Sharpie. Now, we’re aware of the rule that pitchers are not allowed to wear anything that distracts the hitters, but wouldn’t you think a blackened nail would stick out more against a baseball than a white one?
Imagine Oye getting his nails done in front of 50,000 in the Bronx? I don’t think he’ll have to worry about that. Along with the nail polish, he was sporting #89 – a nearly sure sign you aren’t making the big club.
