It’s amazing, the explosion one small comment can create in the post-Twitter world. Jayson Stark, a guest of Mike Missanelli’s afternoon show on 97.5 Wednesday, spoke briefly about the Phillies and David Wright, and within minutes a described improbability turned into “Vance Worley for David Wright?!”

Stark was clear that the Phillies “really like” Wright (who wouldn’t?) but that it would take a “gigantic” package to acquire him. When Missanelli brought up one rumor of Domonic Brown, Worley and another piece, Stark responded that the Phillies could not possibly be that far along in negotiations. The only suggestive comment made by Stark was “don’t ignore it,” and that came only after Missanelli discounted the idea.

The Phillies will not be acquiring David Wright, at least not without trading away every last piece of a perpetually plucked farm system. Let’s look at the facts…

-Wright is under contract for $15 million in 2012 before reaching free agency. If the Mets fail to sign Jose Reyes, Wright remains the Mets’ long-term franchise player. Unless Wright decides he really wants to test free agency, New York could lock him up prior to next fall.

-Even if the Mets do sign Reyes, they won’t be trading Wright during the season if they are competitive.

-If Sandy Alderson decides to trade Wright, the return from a fierce division rival would have to be enormous. We’re talking a “Godfather” offer like Brown, Worley, and an elite pitching prospect or two.

-The Phillies have so much money committed to so few players over the next five years that it is hard to imagine them signing another star to a massive deal.

This just isn’t feasible. Impossible to ignore, sure, but let’s not get caught up in thinking every rumor comes true. Under Ruben Amaro, many have. But it is extremely difficult to envision the Phils’ GM getting this one done.
