St. Louis Cardinals
New York Mets
ST. LOUIS - Carlos Beltran provided the biggest assist of the day for the Cardinals on Monday while taking practice swings in the batting cage behind the team's dugout. It was Beltran, watching on television, who saw the Mets' Angel Torres miss first base after hitting an apparent double to lead off the ninth inning with the Cardinals clinging to a 5-4 lead. "When he hit the ball he was watching the ball," Beltran said. "He never looked at the bag. I saw sand coming off around the bag and I just went and told Mike (Matheny) 'Let's try to throw to first. It looked like he didn't touch the base.' We had nothing to lose. The umpire was looking down so he got a good look at what he did and he called him out." The call by umpire Dave Rackley, a vacation relief umpire, took the potential tying run off second base with nobody out. Jason Motte, who had come in to get the final two outs in the eighth with two runners on base, allowed a two-o...

ST. LOUIS The Cardinals are not promoting top pitching prospect Shelby Miller just so he can sit on the bench and experience life in the big leagues for the first time in his career. They expect him to contribute to their playoff push.
The highly hyped Miller will officially be added to the roster Tuesday, barely three years after the Cardinals selected him out of high school in...
Upon further review, the St. Louis Cardinals held on to beat the New York Mets 5-4 Monday, gaining the verdict on an appeal play at first base in the ninth inning. Mets center fielder Andres Torres was ruled out by umpire Dave Rackley for missing the first-base bag on his way to an apparent leadoff double against right-hander Jason Motte. The misstep, if that's what it was...
ST. LOUIS -- It's been a trend that's haunted him since he first became a starter in 2010, but Jaime Garcia and the Cardinals still don't have an answer as to why he pitches much better at home compared to on the road.
Garcia turned in yet another strong start at Busch Stadium Tuesday, allowing just one unearned run in 7 13 innings to earn the victory in the Cardinals...
When you think about the Cardinals farm system, keep in mind that this is a team that has consistently been in the hunt for the past decade. So, they’ve been drafting in the lower part of the first round every year for the first decade. When you include the fact that they traded top third base prospect Zack Cox to the Marlins for Edward Mujica. Considering all of that...
Pessimism and trade rumors about St. Louis Cardinals pitching prospect Shelby Miller have evolved to major league reality for the 21-year-old with his Tuesday promotion to St. Louis.
Pessimism over injury to and recovery of Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter have evolved to public hopes that the 37-year-old can take the mound in September for the first time this season. In fact...
The St. Louis Cardinals have just come off a road trip, a key one, at 4-6. They still have the second Wild Card spot, thanks to the Pirates and Dodgers having some rough series of their own (up by 1/2 a game on LA and 1.5 on Pittsburgh, as of 10 AM Mon. 9/3), but it’s safe to say that the Cards probably didn’t get the job done.

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Rookie Joe Kelly pitched 6 2-3 effective innings and also doubled, and the St. Louis Cardinals took advantage of a baserunning mistake to beat the New York Mets 5-4 Monday.
Andres Torres led off the Mets ninth with an apparent double, but was called out by first base umpire Dave Rackley on an appeal for missing first base.
Kelly (5-6) allowed five hits and two...
ST. LOUIS - There's something about pitching at Busch Stadium that seems to agree with Jaime Garcia, which is good news for the St. Louis Cardinals. The bad news is that if the team's starting rotation follows form the next four weeks, Garcia is not scheduled to pitch again at home until the next to last day of the season. In his second start at home since coming off...
The Cardinals have put that miserable road trip to rest and taken the series against the NY Pondscum. But they're not the only ones heating up. Milwaukee has won 8 of their past 10. They're inching closer to .500. And with 9 of their next 13 games against three of the teams they're chasing for the Wild Card... Brewers fans are invoking the 2011 Cardinals name as we head...
Barring some more umpiring hijinks, we should be in for a treat tonight as a two good young hurlers take the hill for the middle game of a three-game set in St. Louis. First pitch is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. and the game can be seen on SNY or heard, as always, on WFAN 660AM. Join the conversation on Twitter by following @dailystache or yours truly, @DevOnSports.

OK St. Louis, there’s your payback for Johan Santana’s no-no. Now we’re even.
The Mets clawed their way back from a 4-0 deficit to lose 5-4 against a Cardinals team that admittedly (by them) isn’t at their best right now. The old RISP bug reared it’s ugly head today as the Mets went 0-for-7 today in that category, and it turned out to be the difference in the game...
ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Jaime Garcia carried a shutout into the eighth inning and Yadier Molina got his 1,000th career hit with an infield single that started a three-run second against rookie Matt Harvey in the St. Louis Cardinals' 5-1 victory over the New York Mets on Tuesday night.
Daniel Descalso and David Freese had two hits and an RBI apiece for the Cardinals, who are 42-26...
The Mets bring their newly competitive selves to St. Louis today to try to slow down the Cardinals. The Mets are winners of seven of their last eight games and could help to derail the Wild Card party in St. Louis with a good series. Today Collin McHugh makes his second start of the season as he goes up against Joe Kelly.
Collin McHugh had an excellent major league debut last month...
