Less than 24 hours after adding reliever Takashi Saito to their bullpen, the Diamondbacks signed former Yankees and Nationals reliever Jonathan Albaladejo to a deal and assigned him to the club’s 40-man roster. Albaladejo spent last season pitching in Japan. Drafted by the Pirates in the 19th round of the 2001 draft, the right-hander made his major league debut in 2007 in the nation’s capital with the Nationals. In 14 games, Albaladejo put together an impressive ERA of 1.88 and struck out 12 and only walked two batters in 14.1 innings. During the following offseason, Albaladejo was traded to New York in exchange for the Yankees’ Tyler Clippard, who has turned into a very important component to the Nationals bullpen. During his three seasons in pinstripes, the 29-year-old posted a 5-2 record with a 4.70 ERA in 59.1 innings. Here is a brief 2010 scouting report on Albaladejo from the Yankees blog, River Ave Blues.
