A.J. Griffin notched one of his most impressive outings as a big-leaguer in the Oakland A’s 3-0 victory over Jon Lester and the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night.
After striking out Jacoby Ellsbury on three pitches leading off the game, Griffin gave up a single to center off the bat of Shane Victorino. Dustin Pedroia (last night’s hero for Boston) popped out to Lowrie for the second out before David Ortiz laced a 3-1 pitch to center, putting runners on first and second for Mike Napoli – who struck out swinging on a 3-2 curve to end the threat.
Lester only needed 11 pitches to navigate the first inning, striking out Coco Crisp, popping up Jed Lowrie and getting Josh Donaldson to line out to Pedroia.
Two-out singles from Chris Young and Josh Reddick gave the A’s a chance in the second, but Derek Norris grounded to first for the third out. A two-out single and stolen base by Victorino presented Boston with an opportunity to get on the board in the third, but Pedroia bounced out to Dona...
