In the fifth inning of Tuesday night's Astros-Rangers game, Houston catcher Max Stassi hit a grounder up the middle for a single, his first career hit. Congratulations, Max! But after that hit, things got weird. After Brandon Barnes struck out for the first out of the inning, Astros shortstop Marwin Gonzalez hit a Jason Frasor pitch back to the mound. Frasor threw to second, but his toss went over the head of shortstop Elvis Andrus. Ian Kinsler, standing behind the bag, caught the ball, but Stassi had safely slid into second base and Houston looked to be in a great position with the top of the lineup coming up. But no one told Stassi that he was safe. After popping up from his slide, he started to walk off the field. An alert Kinsler tagged him out for the inning's second out, not just leaving Stassi with an egg on his face but essentially smashing the egg on his face. This play seems like the perfect summation of the Astros season: a promising young player completely undone by a fundamental error. For the record, the oldest player in Houston's lineup last night was Barnes, the team's 27-year old center fielder. The team's 25-man roster only has two players 30 or older on it right now: pitchers Philip Humber and Erik Bedard. [follow]
