Jordan Lyles will be recalled from the minors by the Houston Astros to start Thursday night against the AL champion Detroit Tigers.
Astros manager Bo Porter announced the decision Wednesday at Yankee Stadium. Houston had an open spot in the rotation after demoting Brad Peacock to the bullpen this week.
Drafted 38th overall in June 2008, the 22-year-old Lyles made 40 major league starts over the last two seasons and was 7-20 with a 5.20 ERA in 45 games overall. The right-hander was expected to be a member of the big league rotation this year but pitched so poorly in spring training that he was sent to Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he is 2-2 with a 5.32 ERA in six outings.
''We've received outstanding reports,'' Porter said. ''He's done everything that we've asked him to do and we look forward to getting him back here.''
Porter said Lyles has ''attacked hitters'' in the minors and ''just done a great job of gettin...

When Lucas Harrell takes the mound this weekend against the Tigers, batters can expect to see a lot of two-seam fastballs. The Houston Astros right-hander has thrown his signature pitch 61.8 percent of the time this season. In his most recent start — a shut-down effort against the Yankees — 75 of his 105 pitches were two-seamers averaging 92.4 mph.
Harrell has been specializing...

Any time a club tries something new, people react. Sometimes they overreact. And sometimes they spread misinformation.
The Astros frequently embrace new ideas under general manager Jeff Luhnow, a strong proponent of sabermetrics. Some of those ideas are quite unusual. But the things a reporter hears . . . well, not all of them are true.
I recently called Luhnow after I heard something...
Monday night, Astros rookie Brandon Barnes had himself quite an evening against the Yankees. In a 9-1 laugher, Barnes was 3-5 with three RBI. As if that wasn’t enough, Barnes’ night put him in some interesting company. Per Elias via ESPN: Brandon Barnes was 3-for-5 with three RBI in the Astros’ 9-1 romp over the Yankees. Barnes is the first rookie in 26 years with at least...
It wasn't supposed to be this difficult, this three game series against the Houston Astros. Baseball is unpredictable and on any given day one team can beat any other. That's simply the reality of the game. Still, there are certain games or even certain series where a fan says, "This is one the [fill in the team] should win." Whether it's a lopsided pitching...
The Houston Astros made a handful of moves Thursday that affected their parent roster. They recalled pitchers Dallas Keuchel and Jordan Lyles from Triple-A Oklahoma while optioning pitchers Brad Peacock and Rhiner Cruz to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Lyles faced the Detroit Tigers on Thursday, getting the spot-start where as Keuchel should fill in amongst the dead arms in the Houston...
