Mired in a season-worst losing streak, the Oakland Athletics hope to receive a lift from the return of Yoenis Cespedes. It doesn't appear that Manny Ramirez will be joining him, however. The Athletics will try to avoid a ninth straight loss Friday night when they open a three-game road series against the Kansas City Royals. Oakland was shut out for the third time during its skid after losing 4-0 to Minnesota on Wednesday. The Athletics (22-29) had three hits, with their No. 3-7 hitters 0 for 16 with six strikeouts. "When you get in a little streak like this, guys kind of want to look over their shoulder rather than taking the bull by the horns or grabbing the steering wheel," Johnny Gomes, who is in a 2-for-21 slump, said. "Success and failure is contagious." The losing streak is Oakland's longest since dropping 10 in a row May 30-June 9, 2011, and coincides with the loss of Cespedes to a strained muscle in his left hand. The Athletics were 15-13 wit...

Athletics send RHP Tyson Ross to minors

The Oakland Athletics have optioned right-hander Tyson Ross to Triple-A Sacramento. The team made the move on Thursday's off-day. Oakland is expected to activate outfielder Yoenis Cespedes on Friday in Kansas City to take Ross' place on the 25-man roster. Ross was 2-6 with a 6.51 ERA in nine starts with the A's. He was 1-0 with a 2.13 ERA in his first two starts but...

Crisp gets bumped to eighth in A's lineup

Coco Crisp's slump is such that for the first time this season, the Oakland A's outfielder was not in the top third of the lineup Tuesday. Crisp batted eighth. He had his best game in weeks, with a walk, a double, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single in Oakland's 3-2 loss at Minnesota. Josh Willingham, the former A's outfielder, hit a three-run, walk-off homer off...

Who will go when Cespedes returns to A's on Friday?

The Oakland A's will have an interesting to decision to make Friday when outfielder Yoenis Cespedes comes off the disabled list. The logical player to come off the roster to make room for Cespedes is another outfielder, Collin Cowgill, who has options left and who already has spent time at Class AAA Sacramento this season. Cowgill, however, has been batting second for the...

A's activate Cespedes from DL

The Oakland A's have activated center fielder Yoenis Cespedes from the disabled list, the team announced Friday. Cespedes will take the roster spot left open when pitcher Tyson Ross was optioned to Class AAA Sacramento on Thursday. The Cuban slugger, who signed a four-year, $36 million free-agent contract with the A's during the offseason, suffered a strained muscle on...

Melvin says A's must get in more of a fighting mood

Manager Bob Melvin had a brief talk with his club after Wednesday's loss to the Twins, and he made it clear that the club needs to find the grit that they had earlier in the season, when Oakland was exceeding expectations. "We've got to continue to play hard," Melvin said after his team was swept at Minnesota. "We play hard, but we have to fight hard. There...

Manny asks for release, A's oblige

Manny Ramirez is a free agent again after he asked the Oakland Athletics to release him and the team granted his request on Friday. Ramirez signed a minor league deal with Oakland on Feb. 20 and hit .302 with 14 RBIs in 17 games with Triple-A Sacramento. He served a 50-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball's drug policy last year, but remained in the minors when...
