Athlon Sports is working its way through the major league franchises and giving each its own Mount Rushmore. In other words, if each franchise had a granite mountain in which to carve four seminal faces from its history, who would merit that honor? The Marlins’ Mount Rushmore per Athlon would consist of Hanley Ramirez, Jeff Conine, Dave Dombrowski and Miguel Cabrera. Hmm. I can live with Conine and Cabrera, and maybe Ramirez would be on there eventually, but I don’t think you can omit Luis Castillo. I’m not crazy about Dombrowski either, althought he deserves consideration as the architect of the 1997 World Series team. Athlon put Castillo, Jim Leyland, Mike Lowell, Livan Hernandez, David Samson, Jack McKeon and Josh Beckett on their “close calls” list. If we’re going with a quartet of players, I would add Beckett or Willis. You can certainly make a strong case for McKeon as the club’s all-time winningest manager. I’m sure you guys cri...

The Evaporating Season of Anibal Sanchez

According to Fangraphs, Anibal Sanchez was the 26th most valuable starting pitcher in baseball last season. He finished with eight wins. Somewhere, someone is shouting, "He just doesn't know how to win!" But seriously, to put Sanchez's season in context (if you believe WAR), Sanchez was just a tick less valuable than Zack Greinke in 2011. Greinke won sixteen games...

Florida Marlins INF/OF Emilio Bonifacio tabbed best bunter in 2011

Among the reasons Emilio Bonifacio enjoyed a breakout season was his improved bunting. According to Baseball Info Solutions, no one was better at it in 2011. In his Stat of the Week, BIS owner John Dewan of “The Fielding Bible” fame awarded Bonifacio the Flat Bat award. Bonifacio unseated Angels infielder Erick Aybar, who was tabbed for that distinction in 2009 and 2010...

Marlins’ Anibal Sanchez Shows Off His Shiny New Strikeouts

While perusing the FanGraphs Team Pitching Totals page I was surprised to see the Marlins so high up on the FIP leader list. They’re ranked as 9th best in all of baseball. This is mostly a surprise because after the loss of their ace, Josh Johnson, I assumed that the pitching would certainly struggle. After Javier Vazquez’s (3.57 [...]

MIAMI – The Marlins are looking to have Hanley Ramirez back in their starting lineup. The team isn’t looking to move him to another position. Speculation about a position change surfaced last week when new manager Ozzie Guillen suggested Ramirez could play somewhere other than shortstop. On Thursday, Marlins president David Samson said Ramirez is the team’s...
