The Atlanta Braves found out on Tuesday that struggling second baseman Dan Uggla would undergo Lasik eye surgery, which will sideline the man second in home runs for the Braves for close to two weeks. Uggla, who holds a paltry .186 batting average on the season, had previously planned to undergo the eye surgery following the season, but recent struggles caused the team to for all intents and purposes request the thirty-three year old to go ahead and undergo the procedure now. Uggla was extremely candid in regards to the situation, saying “I’ve been struggling pretty bad and battling with the contacts and grinding with these things day in and day out. I think the best thing to do it go ahead and so it now.” At this point, Uggla deciding to go ahead and have the surgery is the perfect situation for all of those involved: it gives Uggla a chance to get away for a bit and come back sharper, plus it gives the Braves the chance to try out other players—namely Tyler Pastornicky or Paul Janish—at second base in case Uggla’s struggles continue. As bad as Dan Uggla has been during the Braves’ recent hot streak, it’s quite clear that when he’s on he is one of the best power hitters in the game; the only problem is that these moments are fleeting. Atlanta desperately needs Dan to improve following his Lasik surgery; otherwise, he could prove to be the weakest link that prevents the team from winning it all.
