Look out for
The Braves arent worrying after being swept in their season-opening series at New York. "We're fine," CF Michael Bourn told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "We've got good hitting and pitching and a good bullpen. We've got all facets of the game. As long as we're confident in each other, we'll be OK." The Braves were 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position in the first two games before Jason Heyward doubled in two runs on Sunday. They were 1-for-14 with RISP in the series. Brandon Beachy, who is scheduled to start tonight, has never pitched against the Astros. Tommy Hanson, Tuesdays probable starter, is 3-0 against them. The Braves have played well lately against the Astros, taking 11 of the past 13 games against them. Houston took two of three games from Colorado over the weekend. Houstons Brett Myers, who started the past two years, picked up his first save since 2007 in a 3-2 win over the Rockies on Sunday. Jordan Schafer, who came up with the Braves before being traded for Bourn last year, is starting in CF for Houston. Boston, the New York Yankees, Minnesota and San Francisco are the other teams that are 0-3.
Not much is going right offensively for the Braves. RP Kris Medlen has pitched three scoreless innings. Livan Hernandez gave up three hits, but wasnt scored on in his 1 23 innings in relief against the Mets. The Astros (2-1) are above .500 for the first time since July 29, 2009. Houston LF J.D. Martinez is hitting .333 with a home run and three RBIs. Astros starters Wandy Rodriguez and Lucas Harrell didnt allow an earned run in 13 13 combined innings against the Rockies.
All of the Braves hitters are struggling. They are hitting .151 as a team, last in the NL, and are second to last in OPS at .528. Freddie Freeman leads the team with a .250 average and Michael Bourn (.182), Martin Prado (.182), Matt Diaz (.167), Dan Uggla (.111) and Brian McCann (.091) are all below .200. Minors first start was disastrous. He gave up six runs in five innings on Sunday. The Braves have to be concerned about Jurrjens velocity after his fastball reached only 88 mph in his first start on Saturday.
Jones (knee surgery) is on the road trip, but probably still wont be activated until Friday. P Tim Hudson (back surgery) is schedule to return by the first of May. Astros SS Jed Lowrie (thumb) is on the 15-day DL.
On the farm
Triple-A Gwinnetts Christian Marrero went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run on Sunday. Joey Terdoslavich is hitting .133 at Gwinnett. Adam Russell, who is 6 feet 8, has pitched three scoreless innings for Gwinnett. Sean Gilmartin pitched six scoreless innings in his first start for Double-A Mississippi. High-A Lynchburg second baseman Tommy La Stella had seven RBIs in the Hillcats first three games.
