The first inning of the Phillies very first official Spring Training game on Saturday offered a glimpse into what the near future could look like for this team. And it was a very nice picture, full of promise.
Ben Revere led off by doing exactly what we have been told he can do a lot of; run out an infield single. He followed that up with a very convincing stolen base. This kid can fly.
Another new Phillies, Michael Young, did his job moving the runner over the 3rd base. It was textbook small ball; very nice.
And then for the first time in 3 years, Chase Utley stepped to the plate in a Spring Training game. Utley needs to prove to the world, but mostly to himself, that he finally has his knee issues under control. And he did just that with his classic, short swing and a line-drive that scored Revere from 3rd base.
In a perfect world, this is what the Phillies need to do every inning of every game.
However, in the real world, this is just one baby step towards a much larger goal. Ge...

The lineup is initiated by the offensive catalyst of the Philadelphia Phillies, who, until now, has been Jimmy Rollins. Is there a changing of the guard on the immediate horizon?

Jonathan Papelbon gave up six earned in 2/3 of an inning as the Phillies lost to the Tigers 10-1.
For a 10-1 loss, this could have been a lot worse. Cliff Lee pitched a hitless two innings with two Ks and Tyler Cloyd followed with two hitless innings of his own. Phillippe Aumont was sharp in his hitless inning, registering a strikeout.
Ryan Howard continued his solid play...
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder is (inexplicably) fighting for a job this winter after the team signed veteran Delmon Young (who hasn't played in a spring game yet after offseason ankle surgery). Brown is having himself a solid spring so far, and on Tuesday, he hit his second homer of the preseason. This shot, a solo blast off of Zach Nuding of the Yankees, actually cleared...
Waves crash on a sandy beach as the palm trees sway in the
cool gulf breeze. You get up from your spot on the beach just in time to hear someone
ordering a grouper sandwich and a bloody mary as a band plays some reggae
tunes. You hop in the car, light up a
cigar you bought in Ybor City, Tampa the night before and head on your way. It’s
about noon, and your beach day is already...
*Appears that the Phillies starting rotation is already numerically slotted into place- 1. Hamels, 2. Halladay, 3. Lee, 4. Kendrick, 5. Lannan.*Yuniesky Betancout and Ryan Howard, each batting .500, are swinging the hot sticks early on in camp.*Rule 5'er, Ender Inciarte, is carrying a 1.000 OBP, with 3 walks and 1 hit in 1 at bat.*The Phillies are 0-2-1 through the first few...
No, the Phils did not sign the balding man who smashes watermelons. The Phillies did, however, sign Austin Gallagher, a 24-year old Lancaster, PA native formerly of the Dodgers organization. Gallagher is a former 2007 Third Round pick who was at one point fast-tracked to High-A as a 19-year old in 2008 but has had issues staying on the field and has not progressed past High-A. Gallagher...
Miguel Cabrera’s home-run swing already appears to be in Triple Crown form. Two days after launching his first long ball of the spring, Cabrera took Phillies reliever Jonathan Papelbon way downtown, clearing a line of concession stands out behind deep left-center field at Philadelphia’s park.
“That is one of the longest home runs you’re going to see here at Bright House Field...
It’s up to you to tell us who should be part of the Phillies All-Time team. During the winter, we’ll unveil one position at a time for you to vote on. After all the votes are tallied, and all the position filled, we’ll release the results. Make your vote count!

The Phillies opened up Grapefruit League play Saturday against the Houston Astros at Brighthouse Field. The ‘Stros make their American League debut this season and will sport retro uniforms akin to their 1980s teams. The Phils fell to the Astros by a score of 8-3. Cole Hamels started on the bump for the Fightins and…
Cliff Lee looked excellent this afternoon against the Tigers in Clearwater. In two innings, Lee walked one and struck out two. He did not give up a hit. Tyler Cloyd followed with two shutout innings of his own, walking one and striking out one. In the bottom of the fourth...
The Phillies organization has a pair of impressive left-handed arms at the top of the list, followed by some interesting, but largely inexperienced, prospects.

The Phillies organization has developed some interesting arms in recent years with the likes of Jarred Cosart (traded...
They say that, when it comes to understanding anything about the subsequent regular season, you should never pay attention to numbers in March. That’s good advice, and it doesn’t even bother to mention numbers in February. Today is February 25, spring-training competition has only just begun, and nothing matters. To whatever extent any baseball matters, February baseball matters...
Note: Today's game may be subject to suspension due to inclimate weather. The Phillies have lost two and tied in one of the Grapefruit League games they have played in so far. Despite their 10-1 loss yesterday, Cliff Lee was strong as he threw 2 innings of ball while yielding...
