There is no doubt that the Boston Red Sox will put runs on the board. The question at this point is if they can prevent enough runs to go along with that offense. The defense will do their part of that equation with terrific fielding at first, second, center and catching. But can this pitching staff get enough outs? The rotation is unsettled at this point and the bullpen was seriously weakened by the loss of Jonathan Papelbon. Can the Red Sox pull all this together in 2012? Let's take a look. How this Red Sox staff finished last September is hard to erase and equally hard to temper perceptions the terrible ending left in our minds. It hasn't helped that those pitchers who have returned this spring are struggling during Spring Training. Your two rocks at the top of this pitching rotation are supposed to be Jon Lester and Josh Beckett. The two were horrid down the final stretch and had to endure the unfortunate backlash and soap opera that followed. But Josh Beckett is doin...

Mike Aviles Honored To Be Starting Shortstop, But Believes Red Sox 'Will Need' Jose Iglesias

FORT MYERS, Fla. –– Mike Aviles isn't planning to revel in winning the shortstop battle. Sure, the 31-year-old is excited to man the position full-time for the first time since 2008. In fact, he’s eager about it. But Aviles also understands that Jose Iglesias is knocking on the door of a major-league promotion. Before the Red Sox routed the Rays 8-0 on Tuesday, Aviles pulled...

Adrian Gonzalez Expected to Have Big Season as Props for 2012 Red Sox Season Are Released

The book has released 2012 Major League Baseball season props on a handful of Boston Red Sox stars now that Boston's April 5 season opener at American League Central favorite Detroit is barely a week away. First baseman Adrian Gonzalez had an MVP-caliber first season in Boston a year ago after arriving in a big trade with the San Diego Padres. He hit a team-leading .338 in 2011...

Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner Discusses Outlook, Expectations for 2012 Season (Video)

The Red Sox provoked a lot of discussion and questions throughout the offseason. But with Bobby Valentine at the helm and some new players on board spring training has seemed to turn the page on an otherwise frustrating 2011 season. Red Sox chairman Tom Werner joined the Dennis & Callahan show on Tuesday morning to discuss the current state of the team and his expectations for...

Gold Glover Dwight Evans Touts Minor Leaguers Brandon Jacobs, Jackie Bradley Jr. on Road to Fenway (Video)

Dwight Evans, an eight-time Gold Glove winner, likes what he’s seeing in a pair of outfielders in the Red Sox system. Evans says he’s thinking big leagues when it comes to Brandon Jacobs, drafted in 2009, and Jackie Bradley Jr., picked 40th in 2011. Jacobs turned down the Auburn University football program to take swings in the minor leagues, while Bradley was the College World Series MVP.

Daniel Bard Remains Strong Candidate for Rotation as Jose Iglesias Assignment Settles Red Sox Lineup (Podcast)

Red Sox season is certainly never lacking in excitement. With the team deciding to send shortstop Jose Iglesias to Triple-A and install Mike Aviles as the likely starter, one question mark for the team cleared up. But with Daniel Bard's status as either starter or reliever still undetermined, drama remains on and off the field. There's plenty going on as Red Sox spring training...

Red Sox Spring Training Delight - 3/25

While we didn't get a chance to talk about the outing of Clay Buchholz on Friday night because of the site transfer issues, we did use our time to watch most of the game between the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday afternoon. And while that game was going on, another squad from the Red Sox was in Jupiter talking on the Miami Marlins. Now what makes that...

Your Morning Dump...where we have one pitcher not to worry about

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. Lester carved up the Phillies over seven shutout innings, allowing just three baserunners, as the Red Sox won, 6-0. He gave up just two hits with a hit batter, no walks, and 10 strikeouts. Lester threw 88 pitches...

John Williams' Long List of Movie Scores Includes 'Jurassic Park,' 'Jaws' (Photos)

Before fine tuning the "Fanfare for Fenway" track for the 100th anniversary of the Red Sox' beloved ballpark in 2012, John Williams was composing multiple songs for other things -- most notably movies. Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter and Jaws were just a few of his best soundtracks, but there are plenty more movies he has composed tracks for. Williams' "...

Red Sox Shut Down Phillies, 6-0

Although it’s Spring Training, this lack of offense is getting scary. I don’t know if there is something in the water down in Clearwater, but the Phillies just are not hitting the ball very well lately. They put up another donut against the Boston Red Sox on Monday afternoon, being shut down by Jon Lester, 6-0. The Phillies managed just three hits on the day; one from Freddy...
