As the season reaches its halfway point teams start to look towards the future, and that can only mean one thing. The trading season has begun. For teams at the top with the playoffs in sight they can bolster their chances with a big new name and for the cellar dwellers it is time to pick up some prospects and hope next year is another chance for the franchise.

So far this season the Baltimore Orioles, along with the Pittsburgh Pirates, have been the surprise squad currently sitting in a wildcard position. For the first time in years the Orioles can look to make some positive additions to compete right now rather than five years down the road. With a pitching staff that is falling apart, two starters optioned down to AAA Norfolk in the past couple weeks, a quality starter will be the most dire need for Baltimore.

Zack Greinke is the big name on the trading block and will reportedly be shopped around by the Brewers this summer. While the Orioles would love to snag a former Cy Young winner still in his prime there will be a lot of competition, most notably AL East rivals New York are heating up their talks to get the pitcher.

Another issue for the Orioles is that after their top two prospects, Dylan Bundy and Manny Machado both of which have been taken off the table, the bargaining chips get a little weaker. So assuming the Yankees have enough to snatch away Greinke, Baltimore has to look elsewhere for help. The big noise in this season’s trading talks so far has been coming out of Chicago.

Both Matt Garza and Ryan Dempster have been reported in multiple rumors for trades and would be a huge boost to the Orioles current rotation. Another potential trade could come from Arizona in the form of pitcher Joe Saunders, a veteran who would fit in quite nicely in Baltimore.

With the trade for Thome earlier in the week the Orioles management has made it clear that this is a season for shopping so don’t be surprised if the team manages to land one if not two of these high end prospect. In the end it may be a difficult task to steal away Greinke but look for Baltimore to snatch up Garza and either Dempster or Saunders to make a push at the playoffs.
