There is little chance that Baltimore Orioles slugger Chris Davis will set a new single season home run record, but that doesn't mean there are not other marks he can set. With home run No. 37 against the Toronto BLue Jays Sunday he did just that. With a two-run shot in the third inning Davis hit home run No. 37 tying him with one of the greatest baseball players to ever play the game, Mr. October himself--Reggie Jackson, for the most home runs hit prior to the All-Star break in the AL. Pretty darn good company, right? It doesn't stop there. Thanks to a two RBI double in the first inning and his home run Davis now has 93 RBIs making him the second player in history to hit 30+ home runs and 90+RBIs before the All-Star break.   The first guy to do it was Miguel Cabrera who accomplished the feat just a few nights earlier when he hit home run No. 30 Thursday night. He now has 95 RBIs; Davis has 93. Assuming Davis doesn't fall victim to the Home Run Derby Curse the two sluggers could be setting up for a pretty interesting race to a possible Triple Crown. It would of course take a lot for Cabrera to overcome Davis's home run lead and for Davis in turn to overcome Cabrera's batting average. But it will be fun to watch! Baltimore Orioles Mid-Season Report Card

Team: Baltimore Orioles Record: 53-43 (4.5 GB) Biggest Surprise of 1st Half:  There’s a few places to go with this. One of them is the pitching being so poor. That, however, will be discussed in the next section. A surprise on offense would have to be the emergence of 21 year old third baseman Manny Machado. Thus far this season, Machado is leading the Major Leagues in doubles...

Chris Davis hits 37 home runs before break, ties AL record

Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis heads into the all-star break with 37 home runs on the season already. Usually when one has that many home runs in an entire season, it is an impressive feat but the man they call “Crush” Davis is currently on a tear. Chris Davis Chasing Barry Bonds, Not Roger Maris, As 73 Should Still Be Seen as Home Run Record

Chris Davis is having himself one heck of a season. The Baltimore Orioles first baseman already has 37 home runs, and it’s only the All-Star break. His 37 home runs put him in elite company, as he is now tied with Mark McGwire and Reggie Jackson with the second-most homers at the break in MLB history. The only player to hit more home runs than “Crush Davis” before the break...

Davis and Harper provide some monster shots, Cespedes takes Home Run Derby

The 2013 Major League Baseball Home Run Derby came and left in a hurry, probably about as fast as a ball off of Bryce Harper’s bat. With this year’s derby we witnessed one of the greatest Home Run Derby performances ever and a few new guys that crashed the party. When it was all said and done, Yoenis Cespedes of the Oakland Athletics took the cake. He won it with 5 outs left...

Manny Machado’s Real Record Pursuit

If it seems like there’s always a lot of talk about all-time records in the earlier months of seasons, there’s a good reason why. With less and less of a season complete, the sample sizes are smaller and smaller, and over smaller sample sizes, one will observe greater statistical volatility. Basically, it’s easier to be on a record pace after a month or three than it is after...

Sunday & the All-Stars

I’m in New York City right now for All-Star week; however, yesterday, while I was at a very hot Citi Field, there was a whole lot of scoreboard watching on my end. We all know that the Orioles closed out the so-called first half with a 7-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays at Camden Yards on Sunday. Scott Feldman earned his first win as an Oriole, going 7 1/3 innings and giving...
