Both these news bits are a day or so old, but since things continue to be slow I figured I’d put them up here anyway in case you missed them. Tony Sanchez broke his jaw in a bar fight earlier this offseason. He is apparently fully healthy now, but suffered an enormous setback in his development over the past two years mainly because of a broken jaw in 2010. Another round can’t be good. It’s also alarming to see that he got hurt in a fight at a bar…you may recall Tony stirred up some controversy last year when he criticized an umpire on Twitter…so this is his second off-field negative newsworthy event.  And of course, he had a pretty bad 2011 season in Double-A – so all in all, it hasn’t been a great year for Sanchez. Speaking of bars, the Pirates will be opening a new bar in PNC Park. It will be called the Budweiser Bowtie Bar and it will be on the platform near/above Section 101 in right field. It will be complete by Opening Day and will be...

Report: Pittsburgh Pirates First-Round Pick Broke Jaw (Again) in Bar Fight

In an interesting piece of news that was uncovered today by Rob Biertempfel at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Pittsburgh Pirates top catching prospect Tony Sanchez broke his jaw about three months ago in a bar fight while participating in the Florida Instructional League. It was the third time Sanchez’s jaw was broken in two years. The catcher missed most of the 2010 season...

Early Look at the Pittsburgh Pirates 2015 Payroll

Last week I took an early look at the 2013 payroll, and followed that up with an early look at the 2014 payroll. The purpose of the looks is to see if the Pittsburgh Pirates project to have payroll space in the future for a big contract, such as a multi-year deal for Edwin Jackson. Continuing with the series, here is the way-too-early 2015 payroll projection. Some notes before we...

Taking a Look at the Pirates’ Crowded Bullpen

Yesterday the Pittsburgh Pirates announced that they had signed right handed reliever Juan Cruz to a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training. Cruz was considered one of the better set-up men in the game just a few years ago, and is coming off a pretty good year pitching out of Tampa Bay’s bullpen, one year removed from a shoulder injury. Following the move, I raised...

Pirates Talk: Clint Hurdle and Ray Searage Interviewed

This morning has been filled with Pirates talk. First, Ken Laird and Guy Junker talked to Pirates manager Clint Hurdle on TribLIVE Radio. Here are some quotes from Hurdle from the show:"Alvarez will get the first shot at third base."This isn't huge news, but it's good to hear that starting at AAA isn't an option for Pedro, even though he will have another option...

Tony Sanchez Has A Broken Jaw

Ridiculous news from the Tribune-Review this morning, Pirates prospect Tony Sanchez sustained a broken jaw earlier in the offseason in a "scuffle". There isn't much more information available right now, but it sounds like Sanchez just got in a childish fight and got punched in the jaw. This will be the second time he has broken his jaw, and the first time set him back...

Tony Sanchez broke his jaw again last fall

Rob Biertempfel is reporting at the Trib this morning that Tony Sanchez broke his bar in a jaw fight about three months ago while playing in the Florida Instructional League. He also notes that Sanchez appeared fine at minicamp three weeks ago. The math in this case would appear to indicate that Sanchez's broken jaw is less serious this time around, though being allowed to attend...

Last night, Pittsburgh Pirates bloggers at The “Mc” Effect (@McEffect) and Raise the Jolly Roger (@rtjr) started a campaign on Twitter aimed to lure free agent starting pitcher Edwin Jackson to sign with the Pirates. The campaign started around midnight, so the amount of support the campaign received is somewhat surprising. They got Edwin Jackson’s Twitter account...

Pirates sign Juan Cruz

The Bucs inked reliever Juan Cruz to a minor league deal (with an invite to Spring Training) on Wednesday. Cruz is a 33-year old righty with 11 big-league seasons under his belt. His career ERA is 4.13, and last year with Tampa Bay he went 5-0 with a 3.88 ERA. He tends to put up good strikeout numbers (9.1 K/9 for his career) while walking a few too many (4.8 BB/9). This actually...
