Today three of the top candidates for the fifth starters spot pitched. In almost identical stat lines Jon Niese and Fernando Nieve started split squad games. Niese using almost exclusively his new pitch a splitter threw 2.2 innings allowing one run on three hits and two walks, while striking out five. Nieve went 3 innings in which he also allowed a run on three hits and two walks, while only striking out two. Figueroa came into Nieve's game in which he pitched four scoreless innings, allowing one hit and a walk while striking out five. It's funny Figgy should get more consideration but I still feel Niese will be the fifth starter and Nieve will be in the pen, with the team hoping Figgy makes it through waivers and accepts assignment.
