Van Dalsem's "Number 38" (acrylic on canvas)

The National Art Museum of Sport in Indianapolis will host a reception tonight featuring 59 of the best artworks in the world depicting sport art.

Why should you care?

Well, a local artist named Lesley Van Dalsem has won an award in the museum’s 2nd annual International Fine Arts Competition for her painting of Giants closer Brian Wilson (titled “Number 38″). It’s sure to draw a lot of interest and attention from museum-goers.

Van Dalsem, who attended Woodside High School near Menlo Park, has also created some other cool paintings featuring Wilson, Cody Ross, Tim Lincecum and Buster Posey. (You can view those here.)

According to NAMOS’s website, “The Commitment to Excellence in Art and Sport art competition and exhibit support the museum’s two-pronged mission to encourage sports artists in their efforts to create sport art and to collect, preserve and share the best examples of sports art it can acquire. The National Art Museum of Sport has one of the nation’s largest collections of art depicting sport. Over forty sports are represented in the over 900 paintings, photographs, sculptures and mixed media works in the collection.”

If you’re in or near Indy tonight, you should go. It’s free.

The exhibit opens tonight and runs through Feb. 29, 2012.
