NEW YORK -- Jay Bruce's inside-the-park home run got the Cincinnati Reds off to a strong start against the New York Mets, but the play might have cost the Mets more than the first run of their 7-3 loss Friday night.

Mets left fielder Jason Bay left the game after the play in the top of the second inning, as he stumbled on the warning track in the left-field corner while chasing the ball, before crashing headfirst into the wall. Bay picked the ball up and fired it to the relay man, wincing as he did so.

Mets manager Terry Collins and trainer Ray Ramirez ran out to attend to Bay for a few moments, before Bay eventually walked off gingerly with help from Ramirez. The Mets later announced Bay had left the game with a "possible concussion."

Cincinnati would add three more runs against Dillon Gee (4-5), as Brandon Phillips added a two-run homer in the third. Wilson Valdez had two hits and three RBI for the Reds.

Bronson Arroyo (3-4) shut out the Mets until Kirk Nieuwenhuis led off the sixth with his sixth homer of the season. Arroyo, who allowed three runs on four hits, left after Scott Hairston's two-run homer in the seventh cut the Reds' lead to 6-3.

But Jose Arredondo retired the next three batters and Sean Marshall pitched a scoreless eighth before Valdez added an insurance run with a RBI single off Elvin Ramirez in the ninth.

Aroldis Chapman pitched a scoreless ninth in a non-save situation.

Marshall also hit Mets third baseman David Wright with a pitch with two outs and no one on in the eighth. It came five innings after Reds hot-hitting star Joey Votto had been hit by Gee with one out and no one on in his next at-bat after doubling in the first.

Cincinnati tacked on two runs on three hits against Jeremy Hefner in the seventh, with Wilson Valdez hitting a two-run double for a 6-1 lead.

The Reds won their fourth straight game as the Mets dropped their first in their last four.

Bay had been limited to 21 games this season due to a fractured rib and had been back in the lineup for just seven games. He missed the last two months of the 2010 season due to a concussion sustained after he crashed into the wall at Dodger Stadium.

Phillips extended the Reds' lead after Gee hit Votto in the back with a pitch with one out in the third. Phillips followed with a blast to left-center for his ninth homer of the season and a 4-0 lead.

Cincinnati took a 2-0 lead in the first on Bruce's inside-the-park homer and two more hits in a row along with a little help from Bay's defensive replacement, Hairston.

Todd Frazier singled and Ryan Ludwick followed with a double into the left-field corner. Hairston bobbled the ball, allowing Frazier to score.

Arroyo allowed only a first-inning single to Wright while starting out with five shutout innings.

NOTES: As expected, Major League Baseball denied the Mets' appeal of an official scorer's ruling of a hit on a first-inning play in R.A. Dickey's one-hitter Wednesday. Dickey said he appreciated the effort by the Mets, but that he was "relieved" that he was not retroactively credited with a no-hitter. ... First baseman Ike Davis moved up to fifth in the lineup, after starting to finally shake out of his season-long slump recently. Entering Friday night's game, Davis had eight hits in his last 14 at-bats, with a homer and seven RBI. ... Reds center fielder Drew Stubbs (strained left oblique) was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 6. Manager Dusty Baker said Stubbs should return by next weekend. ... With Stubbs on the DL and Chris Heisey out after feeling tightness in his left groin, Wilson Valdez made his first career start in center field. ... Infielder Willie Harris was called up from Class AAA Louisville to take Stubbs' roster spot.
