The Atlanta Braves were forced to make an uncomfortable decision this morning, as the team placed rookie sensation Evan Gattis on the 15 day disabled list following Atlanta’s 2-1 win over the Mets. Gattis, who holds a .252 batting average and is second in the team with 14 home runs and 37 RBIs, strained his oblique in the bottom of the seventh of Monday night’s game in an at-bat that ended with a strikeout. As a result of Gattis’s placement on the DL, the team called up infielder Tyler Pastornicky, who played 76 games with the club last year. While losing Gattis for a little over two weeks is not exactly something that Braves Country wanted to hear, especially considering how popular El Oso Blanco has been this season, this is honestly the best time for the team to have Evan out of the lineup; after all, the team has a solid hold on the NL East (currently holds a 7 game lead) and has seen the offense begin to slowly get into a grove, something that has been lacking significantly for a good portion of the season. The biggest concern for Gattis now is not necessarily returning to the team soon enough, but rather taking his time and completely healing before returning to baseball. With this in mind, it would seem that Gattis’s participation in the All-Star activities may be in question at this point in time, specifically the Home Run Derby that Braves fans have sincerely been hoping that New York Mets third baseman David Wright would select Gattis to participate in. While Gattis should be back with the big league club about a week prior to the battle between the National League and the American League at Citi Field, I would highly suggest that fans be prepared to see him in a limited role in the annual exhibition, if at all. It looks like Wright’s decision on Gattis playing in the HR Derby may have been made for him Should Gattis sit out of the All-Star game (if he is selected)?
