In the third inning of the Mariners-Angels game Sunday, Felix Hernandez wanted no piece of standing on the mound. It had nothing to do with Mike Trout or wanting to spend the day at the beach. It was a swarm of bees that had gathered on the field.
On Fan Appreciation Day at in Anaheim, it was a fan who became appreciated more than he knew. Angels fan Joe Potom, who works at a beehive removal company, and some brave grounds crew members played some killer defense, but not before the bees caused a 23-minute delay. All Potom needs was a Gatorade bucket, a broom and some sort of repellent.
The game was briefly stopped again in the fourth inning when Mike Trout was rushed by another small swarm. But a smoking device dropped by the grounds crew did the trick.
