HOUSTON (AP) -- The Houston Astros have placed shortstop Jed Lowrie on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right thumb. The Astros had hoped that Lowrie would be ready for opening day on Friday against Colorado, but he wasn't quite healthy enough to play. He was injured March 28 and his time on the disabled list is backdated to March 29. He is eligible to come off the disabled list on April 13 and he says he is confident that he'll be able to play then. Lowrie, who was traded to Houston from the Boston Red Sox in the offseason, hit .333 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 14 games this spring. The Astros purchased the contract of infielder Brian Bixler to take Lowrie's spot on the roster.

Bogusevic's age could benefit youthful Astros

HOUSTON At the very least Brian Bogusevic was going to offer perspective. The road of his professional career has been too winding and unorthodox for him to view this present opportunity haphazardly. If some consider Bogusevic, 28, far too old to be lumped into the group of prospects the Astros are examining during this rebuilding season, he views the window of his potential as...

Astros not concerned by 'experts' picks

HOUSTON -- Although baseball is not a game of dumb chance, there is a certain hammer of mathematical reality the Houston Astros can use to knock the crud off the way things feel around here, now that Astros are getting picked last by just about everybody.
