See, Heath Bell is about efficiency. I mean, why have four pitchers walk one batter each when one pitcher can do ineffectively do that on his own. Using four pitchers to walk four batters? That's pork barrel politics. To have one guy do it all just makes more sense. To have Heath Bell do it is fitting on this homecoming week, as the former Met threw only 24 strikes in 46 pitches in the ninth inning. And a good portion of those strikes were foul balls hit by Justin Turner (eight) in an epic 13 pitch at bat where he came from down 0-2 to driving in the tying run with the bases loaded. Bell walked David Wright, Lucas Duda, Ike Davis and Turner before giving up a single to Kirk Nieuwenhuis, thus giving the sweep to the Mets with a 3-2 win on Thursday. You can't say that the Mets didn't treat Jose Reyes right this week. Not only did they give him a video tribute, but they also gave him not one, but three swift kicks in the ass. He also got, totally free of charge, an exasperat...

Can Stanton and Morrison carry Marlins?

I'd like to argue that the Miami Marlins can't win with youngsters such as left fielder Logan Morrison, 24, and right fielder Giancarlo Stanton, 22, hitting in the middle of the order. Well, Morrison is the least of the team's problems, and Stanton at least has something of an excuse, which is more than most of his teammates can say. The Marlins are 7-10 after falling...

Marlins Hitting Woes: Nepotism?

"...this offense during all of Perez’s tenure as the Marlins hitting coach, is failure." We see it everywhere as time moves on and networking becomes that staple of career progression and competence becomes more of a footnote or accessory. “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know”. That is what we hear all the time. And of course, we have seen the offspring...

Logan Morrison gives NYC sightseeing tour

Miami Marlins oddball Logan Morrison has become something of a favorite here at the Sportress, so when an email arrived in the inbox Friday morning linking to the above video where Morrison gives a delightfully LoMo-esque sightseeing tour of the Big Apple on one of those double-decker buses for MLB Fan Cave, I knew right [...]

Marlins' Bell can't find plate in blown save

NEW YORK (AP) -- Justin Turner drew a bases-loaded walk in a sensational 13-pitch at-bat and Kirk Niewenhuis hit an RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning as the Mets rallied past Heath Bell and Miami 3-2 Thursday, the Marlins' fifth straight loss. After the game, the Mets said starter Mike Pelfrey has a partial tear of a ligament in his right elbow and most likely will...

Marlins Drop Sixth Straight

The offensive woes dragged on for the Miami Marlins on Friday as they lost their sixth consecutive game.  This time around it was a 5-0 decision for the Arizona Diamondbacks.   As has been the theme as of late, Miami was given a quality start from their starter but was unable to put together any offense.   The loss dropped the Marlins to 7-12 on the season. Carlos Zambrano was...

Former Teammates Weigh In On Jose Reyes And Fan Reaction

Jose Reyes sharing a moment with Jeff Wilpon. Photo by Clayton Collier. Unless you were living under a rock or otherwise incapacitated, it was impossible not to hear about Jose Reyes’ return to Flushing with his last-place Miami Marlins. After an eventful offseason by the Marlins, headlined by the 6-year, $106 million deal that got Reyes in one of those God-awful Miami uniforms...

Marlins try to snap losing streak vs. D-backs

Though focused on the present, Ian Kennedy hopes the same approach he took during his stellar 2011 season will help him succeed in 2012. The right-hander looks for a 10th straight regular-season victory Saturday night while trying to help the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks hand the reeling Miami Marlins a seventh consecutive defeat. After going 21-4 with a 2.88 ERA for the NL West...

Losing Skid Hits Four

The Miami Marlins lost their fourth straight game on Wednesday as the New York Mets won 5-1.    The game continued a rough road trip for Miami which has not won since leaving Marlins Park last week and has been outscored 12-4 in the span.     The Marlins who are in last place in the National League East now sit at 7-10 on the year. Mark Buehrle put together another great effort...

Don’t Let The Door Hit Ya

When Jose Reyes inked his name on a six-year, 106 million dollar deal back in December it was admittedly hard to be rationale. The Mets were seemingly letting one of the faces of their franchise walk away to a division rival. With all that being said, months later it is becoming increasingly apparent that Met fans need to collectively stand up and salute Sandy Alderson for saving...

Marlins president runs 52.4 miles for charities

Miami Marlins president David Samson ran the equivalent of two marathons on Friday in his ''Run to Honor the Workers,'' raising over $550,000 for 10 different charities. Samson began the 52.4-mile run in Pompano Beach at 7 a.m. and concluded inside the stadium at 6:40 p.m. prior to the Marlins' game against the Arizona Diamondbacks to raise funds in honor of...

Saunders dominant as D-backs blank Marlins

MIAMI (AP) -- Joe Saunders pitched a three-hitter, Jason Kubel tied a career best with four hits and the Arizona Diamondbacks sent Miami to its sixth straight loss with a 5-0 victory over the Marlins on Friday night. Kubel extended his hitting streak to 10 games, his average over that stretch going from .200 to .333. Miguel Montero drove in three runs and Aaron Hill homered for...

Marlins return home, hope to end losing streak

Tune into FOX Sports Florida at 6:30 p.m. to watch the Miami Marlins take on the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Arizona Diamondbacks hope a break in the schedule will re-energize their offense and struggling bullpen. The Miami Marlins need to fix similar problems, but they won't get any rest leading into this four-game series. Arizona opens a 10-game trip Friday night as the Marlins...

Housewarming Gift

The first of anything that Jose Reyes does against the Mets can be pretty jarring. Take Wednesday, when Omar Infante crushed a home run off R.A. Dickey to make the score 1-0. Who do you think was waiting for Infante at the top step with a choreographed handshake? That's right, Reyes. Now I've been the guy who has spent years defending the choreography. So I'm not going...

Post Game: Mets Sweep Marlins in Thriller

The New York Mets (11-8) successfully completed a sweep of the Miami Marlins (7-11) this afternoon in walk off fashion as Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit a bases loaded single to end the game.Trailing 2-1 heading into the 9th inning, Heath Bell had immediate trouble controlling his pitches and walked David Wright. Bell's inability to find his control led him to a full count on Lucas Duda...

2012 Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix: Humber gets rocked & a bad day for closers

Whether new to the job or an experienced veteran, closers had a hard time filling that job description on Thursday. Heath Bell, one of the most consistent closer in recent years, had one of his worst performances when he walked four batters and gave up a hit to allow two runs in the ninth inning of a 3-2 loss to the Mets. Bell may need some time to get over that game both mentally...
