Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington took all of 38 seconds to discuss Jacoby Ellsbury and the possibility that the injury-prone center fielder could be a distraction to the team this season. Cherington gave a canned and somewhat boring answer when asked about his prized leadoff hitter, but that’s not to say Cherington isn't thinking long term. With Ellsbury under a one-year deal (thank God we avoided arbitration) the opportunity to part ways with him during the season will arise, a lot. Cherington will have to make many decisions during the 2013 season, but the long-term future of Ellsbury with the Red Sox is going to be his biggest one moving forward. With Scott Boras (ruthless and infamous sports agent) manning the Ellsbury brand who knows what his asking price will be next season. A lot rides on this 2013 season for both Ellsbury and Cherington, and before it’s all over it wouldn't surprise me if one of these two were gone from the organization, permanently.   ...

Your Morning Dump...Where Nava could be in the mix at first

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. That could be an important spot, since starting first baseman Mike Napoli is not a great defender and the Sox would like someone who could serve as a late-inning defensive replacement. Also, Napoli'...

Junichi Tazawa could be the ace the Red Sox have been searching for

If you look closely to the Red Sox pitching staff you could find one hidden gem, without much fanfare. 26 year old Junichi Tazawa is now three years removed from Tommy John surgery, and maybe he is the ace the Sox have been searching for. Back in 2007 Craig Shipley and Jon Dibble of the Red Sox were the first scouts to see Tazawa in an industrial league in Japan. One game  they...

2014’s Top 10 FAs: Cano, Ellsbury and other future potential Mets

Robinson Cano: The reality is, Cano will be 31 and may not stick at second for the remainder of his career.  The reality ALSO is that he’ll cost a lot of money and the Mets seem to have the position reasonably covered with Daniel Murphy, Wilmer Flores, Wilfredo Tovar, Danny Muno, Phillip Evans and Gavin Cecchini.  The reality ALSO ALSO is that Robinson Cano is one of the...

Red Sox Knuckleballer Steven Wright Ready to Work With Tim Wakefield, Appreciative of Support

Steven Wright has bounced around the minors for years. Now, as Wright embarks on another spring training, he’s turning to someone who carved out a very successful big league career for some advice. Wright, who was acquired by the Red Sox last July, will soon meet Tim Wakefield. The two presumably will discuss the art of the knuckleball, which Wright began throwing as his primary...

David Ortiz attempts to bunt during batting practice (hilarious)

In keeping with our current trend here at Red Sox Life we want to supply you (Red Sox Nation) with a plethora of spring training videos. The video below is an interesting contrast of styles as Shane Victorino, Jonny Gomes and David Ortiz take live batting practice on Friday at JetBlue Park. One of the funniest moments during the 2:09 video was when David Ortiz made an "...

Andrew Bailey Hits ‘Shot of the Century’ to Defeat David Ortiz in Beautyrest Baggo Classic (Video)

The first round of the Beautyrest Baggo Classic is nearing its conclusion, and Andrew Bailey may have provided us with the highlight of the competition. The reliever knocked in a pair of bean bags with a single toss on Monday, making up for his one-point effort in the first round and vaulting him into a tie with Mike Napoli for third place. The second man to go, David Ortiz, may...

Red Sox Injury News: Mike Napoli, David Ortiz

The Boston Red Sox are looking for a bounce-back year in 2013.  For that to happen, their stars will need to be happy.  The team gave David Ortiz a two-year deal this offseason despite his achilles problems, and they gave Mike Napoli a one-year deal despite his hip concerns.  Both players have arrived in camp, and both are looking healthy. According to Alex Speier of WEEI...

Don Orsillo, Jerry Remy, Jenny Dell Drop by Warwick Mall, Talk Red Sox With Kids on Final Day of NESN Tour (Photos)

It was a wild ride, but the NESN Spring Training Kickoff Tour has come to a close. Fortunately, that means we’re that much closer to Opening Day. Don Orsillo, Jerry Remy and Jenny Dell concluded their four-day tour by spending an eventful day in Rhode Island that included a number of stops, plenty of laughs and now countless memories. The crew kicked off the day in Providence,...

Shane Victorino Looks to Bounce Back, While Helping Red Sox Rebound as Well

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Like the Boston Red Sox, Shane Victorino is looking to rebound. The Flyin’ Hawaiian was dealt from Philadelphia to the Los Angeles Dodgers last summer and wound up hitting .255 — 20 points below his career average — with 11 homers and 39 RBIs. “There was a lot on my plate,” he said. “There were things you can’t control. And I try to control those...

David Ortiz Discusses Impact Pedro Martinez Will Have on Red Sox Pitching Staff (Video)

David Ortiz is the only member of the 2004 World Series championship Red Sox that’s still with the team. The only member still playing, that is. Pedro Martinez and Jason Varitek are both back in Red Sox spring training as special assistants to general manager Ben Cherington, and Ortiz talked with NESN’s Tom Caron and Peter Gammons about the impact those retired greats are having...

Andrew Bailey Confident About Making Transition From Closer to Setup Role (Video)

Last season was a frustrating one for Red Sox reliever Andrew Bailey. After two All-Star seasons in Oakland, Bailey was expected to take over as Boston’s new closer in 2012 until a thumb injury forced him out until August and limited him to just 15.1 innings all season. Though the Sox’ closer spot is now held by newcomer Joel Hanrahan, Bailey comes into this season fully healthy...

Three bold (or not) predictions for the month of April

It’s only the start of spring training but I’m already looking ahead to April and the beginning of the 2013 regular season. I can’t reiterate enough my obsession with erasing the Bobby V. era from my memory (as short as it may have been) and moving forward with the John Farrell era - Bobby V’s reign of terror may have been short by measurable (time) standards, but it felt...
