Utilityman Ben Zobrist will be representing the Tampa Bay Rays in the All-Star game. He was not voted in by the fans or players, but by the manager who quite possibly asked his pitcher to hit him. “I think Ben Zobrist is a very, very, very good player,” Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. “He happens to be able to play everywhere, and he’s a switch-hitter.” And Leyland knows Zobrist well. In six games against the Tigers this season, Zobrist is hitting .318 with one home run and two RBI. However, for 2013 he’s been inconsistent, hitting .264 with five home runs and 44 RBI. This year’s trip to the All-Star game will be Zobrist’s second in his career. His first came in 2009, when Rays’ manager Joe Maddon managed the American League All-Star team and chose Zobrist.

Verlander’s Decline in Historical Perspective

Justin Verlander was excellent yesterday against Toronto, throwing seven shutout innings en route to the Tigers’ 11-1 demolition of the Blue Jays. He not quite as dominant as the Verlander of 2011 and 2012, but that it a pretty high standard. Actually, the 2013 Verlander has not really measured up to that standard all year. Verlander won both the Cy Young Award winner and Most...

Game 2013.85: Tigers at Indians

Detroit Tigers: 46-38, 1st Place (1.5 ahead of Cleveland). Somehow the Tigers have pulled the Bengal-Bus into Cleveland in first place, and even-up on the road trip, pulling 3 of 4 from the previously-hot Blue Jays despite the lack of Cabrera and Infante in the Independence-Day-in-a-Foreign-Land-Finale. In fact, the bench–OK, let’s have some respect here–The Bench excelled...

Jim Leyland Insults fans with A.L. All-Star roster

by John Viril— Ok, I get it. The Detroit Tigers won the A.L. pennant last season so manager Jim Leyland gets to manage the A.L. Star team. That means Leyland gets to pick 8 players to the All-Star roster aside from the fan vote—as well as the pitching staff. Leyland has still served up too much “home cooking” in his All-Star choices. The A.L. All Star roster consists of 6...

Photographic Evidence That Miguel Cabrera Is An Absolute Freak Of Nature

It may just be me, but I thought that baseballs were not supposed to be able to be flattened like this. You have to love the phantom camera when it produces images like this. All evidence would seem to suggest that Miguel Cabrera swings a baseball bat hard. [Dane Brugler] Article found on: Next Impulse Sports

The Stingray Strikeout

We call it the ‘stingray shuffle,’ as Florida beaches fill with tourists and locals, swimmers are told to shuffle their feet back and forth to kick up sand and send dangerous rays into deeper water. In Tampa Bay, it might need to be renamed the ‘stingray strikeout.’ The Tampa Bay Rays have very quietly jumped back into the American League East standings at second place and...

Rays embrace theoretical retro look against White Sox

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. Ever wonder what the Tampa Bay Rays would have looked like in 1979? Saturday night was a chance to find out. A game between the Rays and Chicago White Sox was Turn Back the Clock Night at Tropicana Field, where both teams paid tribute to the 1970s. The Rays, of course, played their first season as the Devil Rays in 1998, 19 years after the date their throwback...

Moore (12-3) pitches Ray past Chisox

Despite being snubbed when All-Star rosters were announced, Matt Moore pitched like one again. Moore won his fourth consecutive start to help the Rays beat All-Star selection Chris Sale and the Chicago White Sox 3-0 on Saturday night. ''No,'' said Moore when asked if being left off the AL squad bothered him. ''Those decisions, we're all subject to people...

David Price strong again as Rays finish sweep of Chicago

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- David Price went the distance to win his second straight start since returning from an injury as the Tampa Bay Rays completed a three-game sweep by beating the Chicago White Sox 3-1 Sunday. Price (3-4) worked around eight hits, walking none and striking out five. The 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner spent 47 days on the disabled list with a strained left...

July 7: Rays 3, White Sox 1

The surging Tampa Bay Rays and Cy Young Award winner David Price took down the lowly White Sox by the score 3-1 on Sunday afternoon to complete the sweep. David Price showed why he is a Cy Young winner, tossing nine innings while letting up just one mistake - which we'll discuss soon. The south siders did outhit the Rays, eight to five, but never had a huge threat...
