"If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans." -Woody Allen The plan was that one of Shaun Marcum or Jeremy Hefner would be the one to leave the rotation. But that was before Jon Niese's tendonitis flared up again like it was a bout of hemorrhoids. His performance over the first three and a third innings was your first clue that something was wrong as he gave up eight hits ... most of them hit harder than calculus. The Mets probably could have solved this problem before by just putting him on the DL in the first place. But now with Zack Wheeler in the fold, they have the luxury of putting Niese on the DL this time around, and preserving Marcum's opportunity to stay in the rotation and go 0-21. So much for your plans. What nobody planned on, not even the Atlanta Braves, was for the Mets' bullpen to go five and 2/3 innings and not give up a damn thing. Niese gave up three runs, and then the bullpen shut the Braves down. The more amazing thing is th...

Niese Leaves Game With Apparent Shoulder Injury

Jon Niese was just removed from the game in the third inning with an apparent shoulder injury. He was replaced by David Aardsma. With a look of obvious pain, he motioned to the Mets dugout for the trainers to come out, pointed to his shoulder, and within a minute they all walked off the mound. Niese has been bothered recently by what the team labeled shoulder tendinitis. Losing Niese...

Mets’ Jon Niese Has Rotator Cuff Tear; Injury Might Have Roots In Cold Weather Games

The bad news regarding Jonathon Niese has gotten worse – almost as bad as it can get for the New York Mets. Niese, who left Thursday night’s game in Atlanta in the fourth inning because of pain in his left shoulder, was diagnosed with a partially torn rotator cuff. The announcement came less than an hour after manager Terry Collins was quoted as saying the injury wasn’t severe...

Mets Should Trade Shaun Marcum; Others Also Available

Seriously now, these are the New York Mets. Did anybody really expect the euphoria of Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler to include Shaun Marcum? Marcum is now 0-9 after Wednesday night and it seems ludicrous to keep him in the rotation, especially when Dillon Gee and Jeremy Hefner have pitched well. MARCUM: After giving up homer last night. (AP) Two strong relief outings suggest he could...

Jonathon Niese Injured With Rotator Cuff Tear

The injury that forced Jonathon Niese out of Thursday’s game after only 3 1/3 innings of play has been revealed to be a partially torn left rotator cuff. No immediate surgery will be necessary, but two weeks rest and extreme caution has been advised. Earlier, Mets manager Terry Collins recently announced to reporters that the cause of discomfort was “nothing severe,” but assistant...

Mets SP Jon Niese has rotator cuff tear, surgery not required yet

New York Mets starter Jonathon Niese has been diagnosed with a partially torn rotator cuff, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York. Niese will not undergo surgery at this point in time; instead the plan is for him to rest for two weeks and then have another MRI scan to determine whether it is healing effectively. Asst. GM John Ricco says partial rotator cuff tear for Niese...

Mets place Jon Niese on DL with shoulder injury

After making an early exit from last night’s start, the New York Mets have placed left-handed starting pitcher Jon Niese on the 15-day disabled list, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York. The Mets sent Niese for further testing, and manager Terry Collins told reporters that the team has classified the injury as a strain. Greg Burke is on active roster tonight and...

Jon Niese leaves game with shoulder discomfort

Niese pitched 3 1/3 innings against the Atlanta Braves allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out five. He had been dealing with shoulder tendinitis. The Mets had been planning to go with a six-man rotation with the arrival...

Shaun Marcum Should Get Booted From The Rotation, Not Gee/Hefner

In 1962 it was Bob Miller, in ’93 it was Anthony Young, and now in 2013 there is Shaun Marcum. With last night’s unsightly loss to the Braves, Marcum now holds the third worst record to start a season in franchise history at 0-9. Granted that he hasn’t exactly had a great deal of run support behind him, the 31-year old hasn’t held up his end of the bargain all season long...

Niese Injury Not Severe, Will Miss Three Weeks

Good news… Terry Collins told reporters that Jon Niese’s injury is “nothing severe” and that he should be back in three weeks. He has been placed on the DL and will have one rehab start after some prescribed rest. The team is calling it a strain. Original Post Right-hander Greg Burke is expected to rejoin the Mets this weekend in Philly from Triple-A Las Vegas, a source...

Mets 4, Phillies 3 The New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 tonight at Citizens Bank Park to open their three game series. The Mets have won five of their last seven games. Jeremy Hefner started and after a rough second inning that saw him give up three early runs, he settled down and held the Phillies scoreless for the next four innings while the Mets battled back to...

Game Preview: Mets @ Phillies

The Mets are moving up 95 to Philly this weekend for a series with the Phillies after taking 3 of 5 from the Braves this week. Yesterday the Mets held it together with solo shots with Wright (2 of them) and Brown followed by an RBI double by Satin later. Tonight Jeremy Hefner will be facing Cole Hamels. Hefner is 1-6 this season over 75.0 innings with a 3.96 ERA. Hefner has pitched...

Mets 4, Phillies 3

Juan Lagares hit a go-ahead double, Jeremy Hefner pitched six effective innings and the New York Mets came back from a three-run deficit to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 Friday night. Hefner (2-6) gave up three runs - two earned - and 10 hits to help the Mets snap a five-game losing streak against the Phillies. Eric Young Jr. had two hits, including a two-run single for the...

Another "June Swoon" For the Atlanta Braves? Maybe Not

Brothers B.J. and Justin Upton collide in a June 18 game at Turner Field Writers note: Just as I was about to click "publish" on this column, Chris Johnson belts a 3-run homer off of Mets pitcher Shaun Marcum. So, there's that. In a number of recent seasons, the month of June has not been kind to the Atlanta Braves. In fact, since 2004, the Braves have only had a...
