In November 1997, SP Tony Armas Jr. and SP Carl Pavano were traded to the Expos for SP Pedro Martinez. Pedro went on to win 2 consecutive Cy Young awards in 1999 and 2000. He also was the best SP in baseball during those years.
During the 1997 season SP Derek Lowe and C Jason Varitek were sent to the Red Sox for RP Heathcliff Slocumb who went to Seattle in one of the most lopsided trades of all time. Varitek has spent 15 years with the club and became only the 3rd captain since 1923. He holds the record for catching 4 no-hitters with the club. Derek Lowe still pitches in the majors today and was very good while he was with the team.
During thanksgiving day 2005 the Boston Red Sox received from the Florida Marlins SP Josh Beckett and 3rd Baseman Mike Lowell and RP Guillermo Mota for minor league superstar SS Hanley Ramirez, SP Annibel Sanchez, SP Jesus Delgado and SP Harvey Garcia.Beckett has become the face of the rotation and staff ace while Lowell went on to be the world series MVP in 2007. Although Hanley and Annibel are still playing I believe we got the better of this deal.

To make room for outfielder Cody Ross on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox have designated pitcher Scott Atchison for assignment. The team officially announced the move Thursday, just days after inking Ross to one-year, $3 million passed his physical. Boston will mark Ross’ sixth stop after stints with the Giants, Marlins, Reds, Dodgers and Tigers. Atchison, 35, made 17 appearances...
While the Yankees have made dramatic improvements to their rotation, trading for Seattle’s Michael Pineda and signing former Dodger Hiroki Kuroda, the Red Sox have failed to make much of a splash this winter. Earlier if the offseason the team acquired a pair of closer-type relievers in an effort to replace the departed Jonathan Papelbon; Mark Melancon and Andrew Bailey are likely...
Cody Ross says he has agreed to sign with the Boston Red Sox, giving them an experienced bat to help replace J.D. Drew in right field.
Foxsports.com and ESPN.com earlier reported the contract is for one year and $3 million. Ross told The Associated Press in a text message late Monday that the deal won't be finalized until he takes a physical.
The 31-year-old Ross batted .240...
The Boston Red Sox have set their sights on veteran righthander Roy Oswalt.
The team made an offer to the Philadelphia Phillies hurler on Wednesday night, ESPNBoston.com reported on Thursday.
Oswalt was plagued by a balky back last season and settled for a 9-10 mark with a 3.69 ERA in 23 starts.
The 34-year-old Oswalt is a three-time All-Star selection and was a National League...
The Theo Epstein era is history. The Terry Francona administration is over. As the new season approaches, the scrutiny surrounding the Red Sox will be amplified more than ever due to the 7-20 collapse in September and subsequent clubhouse charades. To end the status quo, there was an overhaul in the front office. Now, the spotlight will shine brightly on general manager Ben Cherington...
I’ve complained in a few places about the Red Sox ownership not being willing to spend a little over the luxury tax threshold to complete this roster. I could rehearse here how offering David Ortiz arbitration is a very questionable decision if you’re treating the luxury tax threshold as a hard cap, but I’d rather talk about that hard cap in the first place. Why are the...
The Boston Red Sox on Thursday confirmed the signing of outfielder Cody Ross to a one-year contract and said right-hander Scott Atchison was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.
The Red Sox and Andrew Bailey avoided arbitration, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com tweets. Bailey, an Athletes First client, agreed to a one-year, $3.9MM deal that includes $100K in incentives.
At this point, less than a month before pitchers and catchers must report to Fort Myers, the Red Sox are more likely...
The Red Sox are about to sign Cody Ross:

Foxsports.com and ESPN.com reported the contract is for one year and $3 million. Ross told The Associated Press in a text message late Monday that the deal won’t be finalized...
A team source said last night that the Red Sox were “close’’ to signing Cody Ross to a one-year contract worth $3 million. The deal would include incentives based on playing time.
Manager Ron Gardenhire told the St. Paul Pioneer Press on Tuesday night that Carl Pavano will start the Twins' opener on April 6 at Baltimore.
