If you've watched any type of baseball over the past month, you've no doubt seen the diamond-themed version of Pepsi's "Refresh Everything" campaign. As with a previous version of the ad, the soft drink attempts to draw parallels between past and present with suggestions for this generation's crop of new icons It's not a totally bad idea, though its execution sometimes makes you wonder if its creators are living in the same world we are. Take the baseball version, for example. Mickey Mantle and Ken Griffey? Sure. Jackie Robinson and Jose Reyes? A reach, but maybe on the basepaths. Old Yankee Stadium and new Yankee Stadium? Of course, if you give the new place a few years and a World Series. But Joe DiMaggio and Billy Butler? Well, wait just a minute while the record scratches to a halt and we call Pepsi's ad execs to see if they know something that we don't.
