Found March 19, 2013 on Redlegs Review:
The roster count now stands at 37. The Reds effectively inched closer to the 25-man limit by cutting top prospect Billy Hamilton and RHP Drew Hayes on Tuesday. They have both been reassigned to the minor league camp. Hayes appeared in six games this preseason and tallied a 3.86 ERA in 4.2 innings. Hamilton struggled in his stint with the big club this spring. He batted .174 (4-23) with two walks against nine strikeouts. Although his speed is second to none, Hamilton still has a long way to go before he can man the center field position in Cincinnati. Here is a look at the updated roster: Pitchers (18) RHP Jose Arredondo RHP Bronson Arroyo RHP Homer Bailey RHP Jonathan Broxton LHP Aroldis Chapman RHP Johnny Cueto LHP Wilkin De La Rosa* RHP Armando Galarraga* RHP Clay Hensley* RHP J.J. Hoover RHP Mat Latos RHP Mike  Leake RHP Sam LeCure LHP Sean Marshall RHP Nick Masset RHP Logan Ondrusek RHP Manny Parra RHP Alfredo Simon Catchers (4) Ryan Hanigan ...

Three Reds who are up, three Reds who are down

Two weeks from today, the city of Cincinnati will be enjoying an unofficial holiday as the Redlegs open their 2013 season against the Halos from Los Angeles. It will be a momentous occasion for all of Reds country as we celebrate the dawn of a new campaign. But for now, we are left to count down the days until Opening Day finally arrives. In the meantime, let us explore a post...

Reds cut 5 more over the weekend

The Cincinnati Reds cut 5 more players from their roster over the weekend, getting their total roster count down to 39. Optioned to Triple-A Louisville were right-handed pitchers Pedro Villarreal and Curtis Partch, infielder Henry Rodriguez and first baseman Neftali Soto. Outfielder/first baseman Donald Lutz was optioned to Double-A Pensacola. Lutz, Rodriguez, and Soto all impressed...

In brief: Leake/Chapman question still unanswered

Bronson Arroyo and his red bat move towards the batter’s box.Last Game The Reds can actually win occasionally! They improved their record to 7-14-2 last night by beating the Rockies 4-3. Bronson Arroyo started for the Reds, giving up 1 run (earned) on 5 hits and 2 walks through 5.2 innings. The RBI belong to Devin Lohman, Donald Lutz, some guy called Jay Bruce who hit a solo shot...

What Feels Like the Easy Aroldis Chapman Solution

If it seems like you’ve read dozens of articles about Aroldis Chapman potentially being a starting pitcher over the years, it’s only because you’ve missed hundreds more. This is an old topic, as is usually the case with relievers who appear to have the potential for more. The Reds invested a lot in Chapman when they first signed him, and as of 2012 he’s mastered the bullpen...

Wednesday's mixed bag of Reds news and notes

The Reds (8-14) plated five runs in the fourth inning to help propel themselves to a 10-6 win over the White Sox on Tuesday. Chris Heisey fueled the offense with a homer and four RBI. Jay Bruce added a solo homer, while Derrick Robinson pounded out three hits and scored three runs. Homer Bailey got the start and allowed five runs (four earned) in 4.1 innings. Wednesday marks...

Aroldis Chapman Wants To Close For Reds

About a month and a half ago, I talked about the situation involving the Reds moving Aroldis Chapman to the Cincinnati rotation. I felt the flame-throwing left-hander should have stayed as the team’s closer, but it was obvious what the organization’s decision was last winter, as they re-signed Jonathan Broxton to a three-year/$21 million deal. However, as we’re just two short...

10 Bold Predictions for 2013: Aroldis Chapoman leads the majors in saves

Full disclosure:  I had this idea written out a week ago for 2013 bold predictions before Aroldis Chapman stated that he would prefer to be a closer. Aroldis Chapman throws the baseball 100 mph.  That’s what he does best.  His fastball is utterly dominant.  He could certainly be a great starter.  The problem with Chapman is that his secondary pitches – the change up...

Cincinnati Reds 2013 Team Preview

If you want me to be 100% honest, I thought it was the Reds year last year. I truly thought after they won the first two games of the NLDS in San Francisco that this team was headed to the World Series. The Reds were going to do one better than my prediction I made before the season of just reaching the NLCS; they were actually going to win the NL pennant and give themselves a shot...

In brief: Votto on mental preparation

Last Game The Reds’ offense put on a show during their 6-10 win over the White Sox yesterday. Homer Bailey was shaky to start, allowing 5 runs (4 earned) on 9 hits and a walk in 4.1 innings. Of course, three of those runs came from a first inning home run by Adam Dunn, and Bailey’s hardly the first guy to be the victim of one of those. On the other side, Jay Bruce hit his fourth...

Reds 10, White Sox 6

Chris Heisey and Jay Bruce hit consecutive home runs and the Cincinnati Reds tagged John Danks and the Chicago White Sox 10-6 Tuesday. Brandon Phillips singled twice in his first game since returning to the Reds from the World Baseball Classic. Cincinnati roughed up Danks for 10 runs on 11 hits and two walks in 3 1-3 innings. Heisey hit a three-run homer in the third inning and...

Simon Hopes for Same, for a Change

One year ago Alfredo Simon’s past was one of incredible change and his future was uncertain when the Reds picked him up off of waivers a couple of days before starting their regular season. He was a nice surprise in their 2012 bullpen and now they are hoping for more of the same from the 31 year-old right-hander who recently helped his native Dominican Republic to a WBC championship.
