No one was sure what to expect of Joe Blanton when he arrived at spring training three months ago. He was limited to eight starts in 2011 due to an elbow injury. The Philadelphia Phillies, the doctors and Blanton felt the best remedy was rest, not surgery. The uncertainty prevailed throughout the beginning of the spring, but Blanton has proved all doubters wrong in the time since. The 31-year-old veteran took a shutout into the eighth inning Monday and settled for his fourth win in seven starts this season as the Phillies beat the Astros 5-1. Blanton had held Houston to four hits in seven shutout innings before allowing a home run to pinch hitter Marwin Gonzalez to begin the eighth. Blanton, who was tagged with a loss in his first game this season, which came in relief, is 4-2 with a 2.81 ERA in seven starts. The fifth starter of the Philadelphia rotation, Blanton has gone at least seven innings in five of his seven starts. Phillies starting pitchers lead off of baseball wit...

Phillies Trade Options Are Limited

A lot of people have been suggesting the Phillies make a trade of some kind to infuse their struggling offense or to bolster their bullpen. It seems reasonable enough, but it started me thinking. Who exactly can the Phillies trade and what could they expect in return? The Phillies have very few commodities in terms of major league baseball. They have a number of blue chip players...

Jake Diekman Could Signal A Bright Future for Phillies’ Bullpen

Jake Diekman was impressive in his Major League Debut as he picked up the win for the Phillies. Diekman could be a key piece for the future of the Phillies' bullpen. It was the same old story for Cliff Lee. Eight innings of one run baseball and this team still couldn’t get him the win. It seems as though this starting rotation is completely snakebitten and unable to get solid...

Are The Phillies Misusing Jonathan Papelbon?

Jonathan Papelbon has been sharp in his debut season with the Phillies thus far. He has allowed just four runs in his first 15 innings of work (2.40 ERA) and continues to blow away hitters, notching 18 strikeouts already. He was unavailable Monday afternoon, though — after throwing the past three nights consecutively, including with a four-run lead in Sunday’s game (+0.01 WPA...

Report: Cole Hamels Asking for Seven-Year Extension From Phillies

Cole Hamels is widely considered to be the best pitcher hitting the free agent market this offseason. That is, of course, if he doesn't re-sign with the Phillies first. The Philadelphia starter 's agent is reportedly asking the team for a seven-year deal, according to NBC Philadelphia's Howard Eskin. Hamels, 28, is 5-1 with a 2.28 ERA to start the season, and would likely...

Phillies' Worley placed on DL

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Vance Worley was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 12, with right elbow inflammation. The team isn't sure on the severity of the injury, but Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. told reporters that more should be known. The 24-year-old posted a 3.07 ERA in his first seven starts. He will be replaced by Kyle Kendrick,...

Phillies Walk Off On Pence Home Run

Hunter Pence redeems himself with walk-off home run to power Phillies to 4-3 win in 10. Phillies vs. Astros 5/15/12 Quick Hits: Coming into today's game, Cliff Lee had not pitched a winning decision since September 26, 2011. Unfortunately, he will have to wait until his next scheduled start to break that streak. Despite coming out of the game after 8 innings with a 3-1 lead...

Out of the Batter's Box - A toast to Placido Polanco's 2,000th hit

A toast to George Brett, who celebrates his 58th birthday today. Here he is enjoying a beverage with Mike Schmidt for a Sports Illustrated photo.  Placido Polanco's first home run of the season sure was a memorable one. Polanco's two-run homer to left center field last night in the eighth inning of a damp game against the Houston Astros pushed the Phillies...

Out of the Batter's Box - Phillies earn second home series win of season

Cole Hamels was good yesterday. Hey, he should have been with the extra rest after being suspended last week. With yesterday's 3-2 win against the San Diego Padres, the Phillies picked up just their second home series win of the season (and first since taking two of three from Miami from April 9-12). So far the Phillies are 7-9 at Citizens Bank Park. If Charlie Manuel really...

*The teenage sensation, the Wunderkind, the Natural, the adolescent phenom, the one and only uber-hyped Bryce Harper hit the first homerun of his career last night.  He also committed an error.  He also struck out.  Oh yeah, he committed his first career Howard.  Welcome to the list kid.*Placido Polanco helped put the game away in the bottom of the 8th inning last night with...

Cole Hamels is looking for a seven-year deal

Baseball's new villain Cole Hamels is looking for a seven-year contract extension that surpasses C.C. Sabathia's seven-year, $161 million deal with the Yankees in 2008 according to Andrew Kulp The700Level.com. Apparently he'll hold the world hostage if nobody gives that kind of money to him. Back in March, I speculated that Hamels could ask for a C.J. Wilson's type...
