Found June 23, 2013 on Mets Merized Online:
The Mets obliterated the Philadelphia Phillies this afternoon by the score of 8-0 to take the series, their second straight on this road trip. It was the Mets’ third shutout victory of the season. David Wright led the Mets’ 12-hit attack with four hits including two doubles, a triple and his 12th home run of the season. It marked his first career game with four extra-base hits and tied a franchise record. Wow… Wight also drove in two and scored a pair of runs. Eric Young Jr. had a huge game at the top of the order and went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Marlon Byrd continued his hot stretch with two more hits and a pair of runs driven in. Oh yeah… Matt Harvey pitched today… The righthander didn’t strikeout 13 as he did in his last start, but he did deliver six scoreless innings before the rains came and ended his outing. Harvey hit 100 mph on the radar gun and stymied the Phillies lineup, holding them to just two hits and a walk while striking out a meager six batters...

Zach Lutz Will Join the Mets on Sunday

The New York Daily News is reporting that the New York Mets have placed 1B/LF Lucas Duda on the 15-day disabled list and have called up veteran Mets farmhand Zach Lutz. Lutz, 27, was hitting .286/.372/.481 in Las Vegas prior to getting the call. Many believed that Ike Davis was going to be set to rejoin the team with word of Duda’s injury, but the organization believes that the...

Mets Should Not Be Seduced By Davis’ Vegas Numbers

Las Vegas, I learned in grade school geography and reinforced by the movie “Casino,’’ is located in the desert, and when lost in the desert one can fall victim to a mirage. Surely, the New York Mets know this, too, and should not be seduced by the mirage of Ike Davis hitting back-to-back two-homer games. Davis, once considered part of the Mets’ core, is in Vegas gambling...

Zack Wheeler Gives Mets Fans More Hope For the Future

It’s been very difficult to be a Mets fan these past few years. Since their epic collapse in 2007, fans have witnessed over five years of injuries, disappointing signings, embarrassing losses (Luis Castillo, anyone?) and poor ownership. There have been bright spots, such as Dillon Gee’s 7-0 start and Jose Reyes’ batting title in 2011, and R.A. Dickey’s Cy Young Award last...

Ike Davis Has Second Straight Two-Homer Game For Las Vegas

First baseman Ike Davis walloped two more home runs for the Las Vegas 51s on Friday night, despite a 5-3 loss to the Tucson Sidewinders at Kino Stadium in Arizona. For the 26-year old Davis, it was his second straight two-homer game and with those blasts his confidence is now at an all time high as he continues his comeback to the major leagues. While there is no timetable set...

Mets Bypassed Davis For Lutz Because Team Was Facing Three Left-Handers

I had two emails from readers asking me why the Mets elected to promote Zack Lutz rather than Ike Davis this weekend. The fact is that the Mets didn’t want to set David up for failure and with three lefties coming up in John Lannan of the Phillies, and John Danks and Chris Sale of the White Sox, they thought it best to leave Davis in Las Vegas where he can continue getting used...

What to Expect in Zack Wheeler’s Citi Field Debut

According to ESPN New York’s Adam Rubin, Zack Wheeler will make his Citi Field debut this Sunday, June 30th at 1:10 PM against the Washington Nationals. While Wheeler will make his second big league start tomorrow night against the Chicago White Sox, what should one expect from the dynamic prospect as he heads home for the first time? To find out, it’s important to look beyond...

Ike Davis Named PCL Player Of The Week

As we were talking about when Ike Davis will make his return to the Mets in the big leagues, he’s been bestowed with today’s Pacific Coast League Player of the Week award. The first baseman enjoyed a week in which he hit a healthy .474/.630/.1.263 in six games. That line includes four home runs, seven RBIs, and eight walks. Those four homers came in back-to-back games; he enjoyed...

Mike Adams Is Injured Again, Michael Martinez DFA'd; Phillies Turn To Cliff Lee Piece

Mike Adams' injury-rittled season continues. This time, Adams is being sent to the 15-day disabled list with bicep tendonitis. This is Adams' second disabled list stint since signing a two-year, $12 million contract with the Phillies. Even while on the roster, Adams has been frequently unavailable due to injury. To...

Philadelphia Phillies: Jonathan Papelbon blows third straight save

For most of the first three months of the Major League Baseball season, Philadelphia Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon had been excellent. But for some reason, over his past few outings, the 32-year-old right-hander has fallen apart. On Monday night, Papelbon entered the bottom of the ninth inning with a 3-0 lead over the San Diego Padres. He proceeded to blow his third save in a...

Phillies Weekly Preview, 6/24-6/30

Are we back in 1997? Why are we still writing about this team? I don't know, but I don't ever stop caring. Even at 36-40, even when Karma finally bit us and convinced us that we stunk, after losses to the Mets. PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (36-40, NL East-3) @ SAN DIEGO...
