Boston Red Sox
Toronto Blue Jays
Omar Vizquel hit a pair of sacrifice flies, including one in the ninth inning that lifted the Toronto Blue Jays over the free-falling Boston Red Sox 4-3 on Sunday.
Toronto entered the series in last place in the American League East but left Fenway Park two games ahead of the Red Sox. The Blue Jays have won four straight overall and six in a row against Boston.
Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia homered for the Red Sox, who have lost four in a row and 10 of 11.
Reliever Brandon Lyon (2-2) got the win and Casey Janssen picked up his 20th save.
Boston got a strong start from Clay Buchholz (11-6) but failed to give him much run support.
Buchholz allowed four runs on seven hits over 8 2-3 innings, retiring 13 straight batters before Rajai Davis blooped a single with one out in the ninth. Davis promptly stole his 41st base and took third on a single by rookie Anthony Gose, who hit his first career homer Saturday night and drove in five runs.

MLB has come out and said they will investigate the seemingly high number of leaks regarding the waiver wire deals the Red Sox made throughout the month of August.
Editor's note: The temperature gauge is a Bill James-created statistic that measures how hot or cold hitters are. We will spotlight Red Sox and opposing team temperatures on game days. The Red Sox' bats have been just about as cold as they can be over recent weeks. Even Dustin Pedroia, who had a 15-game hitting streak and was keeping the Sox afloat amidst a dreadful West...
BOSTON -- With a fielder's choice in the fifth inning, Dustin Pedroia achieved a feat. Pedroia was out at first, but the run that crossed home plate was Pedroia's 400th career RBI. But he couldn't celebrate the accomplishment -- nor did he care to -- after Boston lost 7-5 to Toronto. "I didn't even know that," Pedroia said of the accomplishment. "We...
BOSTON -- For the first time in nearly a year, John Lackey took the mound at Fenway Park. Unfortunately for the hurler, it was only to toss batting practice and not pitch against the Blue Jays. But it was still a momentous step for Lackey. At roughly 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, he unleashed 15 pitches against his teammates, his first taste of pitching against live hitting since last September...
BOSTON -- The Toronto Blue Jays beat up on Daisuke Matsuzaka early Saturday night, knocking the Boston Red Sox right-hander out of the game after just 1 1/3 innings. The result was a 9-2 Toronto win, as the Blue Jays took the first two games of their three-game set at Fenway Park. Matsuzaka (1-5) gave up five runs on five hits, a walk and a hit batter. His ERA rose from 6.15 to...
The Red Sox have had a pretty rough stretch over the past 10 games, going a brutal 1-9 over that time. But that sole win came behind the powerful left arm of Jon Lester. Lester, who has had a pretty rough go of it this season, has finally put together a nice run of outings and it showed once again on Tuesday in Seattle. The Seattle, Wash. native was making his only homecoming appearance...
BOSTON -- Back spasms have resulted in Jarrod Saltalamacchia's latest setback. During the seventh inning of the series opener against the Blue Jays, the catcher left the game and was replaced by Ryan Lavarnway. A day later, Lavarnway received the starting nod over Saltalamacchia. "Salty is going to rest all day today and not take batting practice," Red Sox manager Bobby...
Each year, sports medicine becomes more innovative. Over the past decade, the platelet-rich plasma injection has evolved into one of the foremost options for injured players. For the Red Sox, two players –– David Ortiz and ex-outfielder Carl Crawford –– relied on the treatment this season. Nearly two weeks ago, Ortiz received the shot to alleviate pain in his injured Achilles...
The Toronto Blue Jays did their part in making the Boston Red Sox's miserable season just a little bit more wretched. They swept Boston for the second consecutive series at Fenway Park with a 4-3 win Sunday. The sweep knocked the Red Sox into last place in the American League East and moved the Blue Jays into fourth place. It's not much when you consider the hot race...
After falling 7-5 last night, the Boston Red Sox will take on the Toronto Blue Jays tonight in the second game of a three-game set known here as the Battle for the Basement at historic Fenway Park.
First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Blue Jays television market, you can catch the game...
With the Sox present, and future, are uncertain under general manager Ben Cherington, Red Sox fans are looking to the past to find an answer to one of its most frequently asked questions. “Who was really responsible for the Red Sox’ glory years?” The 2004 Red Sox team could be considered one of the best rosters ever assembled in organization history. With a lineup consisting...

When you think of great shortstops, you think of Venezuela.
First with Luis Aparicio, then with Ozzie Guillen, and now with Omar Vizquel, the line stretches from 1959 through 2012.
The next great shortstops from this part of the world are both from small island countries off Venezuela.
The one everyone has heard about is Jurickson Profar, from Willemstad, Curacao...
