Ricky Romero pitched four hitless innings before leaving with a tight left groin, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Tampa bay Rays 5-0 Friday. Jeff Niemann, in the three-way scramble for one of the last two spots in Tampa Bay's rotation, gave up four runs in 3 1-3 innings. Niemann had allowed just two hits and no runs over five innings in two previous starts, but he gave up eight hits this time, including a pair of RBI singles to J.P. Arencibia. Romero struck out four. Travis Snider hit his fourth spring home run, off Jhonny Nunez in the sixth inning. Brandon Guyer bunted leading off the sixth against Chad Jenkins and Chris Gimenez followed with a single for the Rays' only hits.

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. Reid Brignac looks at the numbers attached to his name from 2011 and still has trouble making them all add up. His offensive struggles the .193 batting average, the five total extra-base hits for the entire season followed a promising rookie season with the Tampa Bay Rays and a highly touted minor-league career as a shortstop with a big-league future. 2012 burning question: Toronto Blue Jays

From my season preview of the Blue Jays earlier this morning... Burning QuestionEveryone knows about the talent that Colby Rasmus possesses, but he was pretty awful after coming over from the Cardinals last July. Is this going to be the year where he finally turns into a superstar? Ramsus's first two years with the Cardinals were prtty damn good. He OPSed .714 as a 22 year...

Jeremy Hellickson and Re-Defining BABIP

There aren’t many mainstream writers out there that are willing to tackle sabermetric concepts with players, so I have to give Marc Topkin from the the Tampa Bay Times a tip of the hat for mentioning BABIP to Jeremy Hellickson. Not only did he mention a sabermetric statistic to a player, but he brought one up that makes Hellickson look bad: “Yea, I just got lucky on the mound...

Shields fans 7 in 6 innings, Rays beat Pirates

James Shields' exhibition season has gone as well as he could expect. Except for one pitch. Shields struck out seven in six innings and allowed his first earned run of spring training as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 Saturday. Tampa Bay's scheduled opening-day starter, Shields allowed four hits and walked none. He had thrown 11 consecutive scoreless...

Feel Good Story of the Day: Rays Shave Heads for Cancer

The Tampa Bay Rays were, almost literally, all in on raising money for pediatric cancer research. Manager Joe Maddon hatched the idea to shave his head, and invited his team to join him, in an effort to raise money and awareness for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation. Oh, they joined him all right: Seventy-one Rays in all, including players and lcub personnel, succumbed to the razor...

Rays cut hair to support children with cancer

PORT CHARLOTTE Getting cut in spring training was never anything like this. Before a crowd of smiling and cheering spectators, the Tampa Bay Rays' roster got trimmed in a most unusual fashion Thursday morning with the hair of players, coaches, staff and manager Joe Maddon cascading onto the Charlotte Sports Park boardwalk. SLEEPING GIANTS WITH TALENT AND MONEY, BLUE JAYS QUIETLY BECOMING THREAT IN EAST

DUNEDIN, Fla.-Imagine what the Rays would look like with the finances to keep all of their best players. Now stop imagining. Because it is happening. Unfortunately for the Rays, it is not in Tampa Bay. Heck, it is not even in this country. The Blue Jays, methodically, have assembled a talent base at both the major and minor league levels that has them poised to turn the AL East...

Sleeper Alert: Jeremy Hellickson

Author: Andrew SwansonThe Tampa Bay Rays have been busy this offseason, trading Matt Garza to the Cubs and Jason Bartlett to the Padres for a handful of prospects.  Although the loss of Garza may upset some Tampa fans, it likely opens the door for the highly touted Jeremy Hellickson to become part of the team’s starting rotation.  Hellickson was drafted right of high school...
