Doesn’t matter what level. NFL college or high school ranks in football a quarterback controversy usually arises. Do the Blue Jays have a closer controversy? The Jays edged the Minnesota Twins 6-5 as closer Casey Janssen struck out Ryan Doumit on a 3-2 pitch and catcher J.P. Arencibia threw out Alex Presley to end the game before 27044 fans at Target Field. That’s twice in a week Arencibia has erased the tying run at second base for the 27th out to save the day. With two out and runners on first and third Arencibia threw out Chris Getz in a 4-2 win over the Kansas City Royals on last Saturday. “We’re in the bullpen on the 3-2 pitch (to Doumit) asking ‘send him? Send him?” said bullpen coach Pat Hentgen. “Everyone said yes.” Arencibia entered the game in the top of the ninth pinch hitting for Josh Thole who was at his usual spot with R.A. Dickey on the mound as Dickey allowed three runs in 61/3 innings to win his 12th game. “J.P. will say to me ‘can’t you go nine innings any more?’ and I’ll say ‘we’re going to bring in both our closers’ ” said Thole. “That’s awful tough to sit the whole game and go in there cold like he did.” Janssen was credited with his 28th save in 30 tries. But after the strike-em out throw-em out warm-up-the-bus double play should Arencibia be credited with the save? A quick poll: Reliever Brett Cecil who retired the only two men he faced in the seventh: “Casey gets the save.” Kyle Drabek: “It’s Janssen’s save but J.P. made a good throw.” Anthony Gose who manufactured a double and scored in the Jays’ five-run third: “Not taking anything away from Casey but J.P. has come up bit at crunch time twice in the last week. It’s J.P.’s save.” Steve Delabar: “I might have to give it to J.P. but Casey held the runner close.” And now for the tie-breaking vote on who saved the day for the Jays ... Arencibia: “It was Casey’s save he was on the mound. He got the job done.” To quote a rosy-eyed optimist ... Janssen’s night did not start off well. Josmil Pinto hit a 2-1 pitch 421 feet headed for his first major league homer in 14 at-bats leading off the ninth making it a one-run game. Pinto had 15 homers this season split between double-A New Britain and triple-A Rochester in 523 plate appearances.
