Boston Red Sox left fielder Carl Crawford, who hasn't played an inning this season, will be out three more months with a sprained UCL in his left elbow. The UCL is the elbow ligament that is typically repaired in Tommy John surgery, though Crawford is going to attempt to rehab his elbow since the ligament is sprained and not torn.

Crawford's rehab will include platelet rich plasma treatment (or PRP), a process that many athletes have used, including Troy Polamalu, Tiger Woods, Hines Ward, and Takashi Saito. Saito has the most comparable injury to Crawford, as his UCL was torn, and he opted for PRP as opposed to Tommy John surgery. His missed two months of game action, and was pitching by the end of the year. Albert Pujols also suffered a sprained UCL in 2003, but Pujols didn't miss any gametime.

Crawford intially had surgery on his wirst in the offseason, and injured his UCL while rehabbing. With Jacoby Ellsbury still out for another month, and Crawford possibly not coming back until after the All-Star Break, the Red Sox need new acquistion Marlon Byrd to produce. In four games and 17 plate appearances with Boston, Byrd has five hits, all of which are singles, and no walks. He's been Boston's primary center fielder, with Cody Ross in left and Ryan Sweeney in right. Both of those players were also acquired by Boston in the offseason.
