Photo by Michael BarenAdam Rubin found a little known clause in Blaine Boyer’s contract in which the reliever can opt out if he doesn’t make the team by March 31st. In seven appearances (8 innings) Boyer has an ERA of 1.13, while striking out seven and only walking three. It appears that six spots are locked in the pen; Krod, Izzy, Buchholz, Parnell, Byrdak and Carrasco. The last spot will now come down to three pitchers who could be lost if they don’t make the team; Acosta is out of options, Beato is a rule V pick and now we find out Boyer has an out. Of course, the Mets could use Parnell’s option since he’s been struggling and keep two of them or they could work out a trade with the Orioles, at which point they would get him with three options and six years of control. I think Acosta might have sealed his fate when he got shelled; unfortunately that’s how tight the race is for these last spots…As it turns out, right-handed reliever Blaine Boyer has a March 31 out in his minor leag...
