Moments after arriving in Lakeland, Florida for Spring Training yesterday, Tigers manager Jim Leyland shook things up. He announced that Brandon Inge will be given a shot to win the starting 2B job. At first, this might just sound crazy and numbingly stupid, but let me explain why that cagey old man might know what he’s doing.

First, a little on Inge. Inge has primarily been a 3B for the last decade. For several years, he was a plus defender at the hot corner. The last few years, however, his mobility and range have been zapped due to nagging injuries to both knees. This was painfully obvious last year when Inge’s offensive numbers, which were never good, dropped to horrendous levels. He was so bad, that he was sent down to AAA Toledo for a few months to straighten things out. Inge was never a stud with the bat, but his plus defense used to cover for that. But those previously mentioned knee injuries have all but killed his only positive skill.

This season, his last under contract, Inge lost the 3B job (which he was never guaranteed to begin with) when Prince Fielder signed with Detroit. The Tigers quickly announced that Miguel Cabrera would move back to his original position, 3B. Originally, it seemed that the 2B job would be split between Ryan Raburn and Ramon Santiago. At this point, both are better than Inge defensively and offensively.

Here’s why I think Leyland might be on to something though. This will give Inge the Spring to focus on 2B, which I think sets him up nicely to be a utility guy off the bench. That’s the only positive that could arise from this move. Inge is not good enough to be a regular anymore. He probably hasn’t been since 2006. His WAR hasn’t cracked 2.0 the last five years. He should not be on the field more than twice a week. His body probably wouldn’t hold up to much more than that, and his production won’t justify it. So, Inge as a utility guy? I guess it could work. But don’t Raburn and Santiago both already serve that roll? This announcement is just another head scratcher in an offseason filled with odd moves by Detroit.

The BP First Take: Friday, February 17 by Daniel Rathman

Remember when we all thought the Tigers were crazy for moving Miguel Cabrera back to third base? Well, here is a possibly even crazier idea: Brandon Inge, second base. To be sure, the Tigers caught themselves in a bit of a bind with Inge as soon as they signed Prince Fielder to a nine-year, $214 million deal. Inge is owed $5.5 million for the 2012 season—pricey for a bench...

Magglio Ordonez Doesn’ t Want a Minor League Deal

According to Danny Knobler, of CBSSports.com, Magglio Ordonez (.255/.303/.331 in 357 plate appearances with the Detroit Tigers in 2011) has indicated that he’s not in the market for a minor league contract. Comerica Park to feature bigger, better scoreboard

The motto of the 2012 Tigers might just be bigger is better. They have added a larger-than-life slugger, Prince Fielder, by giving him a larger-than-life contract, and now the team has officially announced their plans for a new scoreboard, which is scheduled to be fully operational by Opening Day. Every year there are discussions with ownership to assess how to upgrade the ballpark...

Tony LaRussa Making Comeback With Detroit Tigers?

Tony LaRussa may have retired as manager of the 2011 World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals, but nobody truly expected him to stay away from the game of baseball entirely. Not yet, at least. LaRussa has been invited by good friend Jim Leyland, manager of the Detroit Tigers, to attend Spring Training in a non-uniform, non-official capacity. That means that anyone hoping LaRussa...

The 2012 Detroit Tigers’ greatest unknown

The 2012 version of the Detroit Tigers comes to the table with plenty of certainties. But as absolute as their extra-base power and front-line starting pitching are, a few x-factors remain that can put this team over the top or hold them back from their ultimate goal. Make no mistake, barring a rash of injuries; the Tigers are going to the playoffs. The AL Central is one of the weaker...

49 years and still loving it

For decades, Jim Leyland has had the rugged optimism of a prospector in the Old West. Now he really is a forty-niner. "This is my 49th spring training," Leyland said.
