Dan Uggla's three-run homer in the third inning gave Atlanta the lead and Paul Maholm threw seven strong innings to lead the Braves to a 6-1 win over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night. The Braves remained 4 1/2 games behind NL East-leading Washington, which earned a 6-4 win at San Francisco. Uggla is hitting only .215 but has homers in two straight games, giving him 15. Jason Heyward had a two-run double in Atlanta's three-run fourth inning. Edinson Volquez gave up six runs and seven hits and two walks in only 3 2-3 innings. Following a six-game stretch where he was 3-0 with a 1.55 ERA, Volquez (7-9) has allowed four or more runs in four straight starts. He has not completed the fourth inning in his past three starts. Maholm (11-7) gave up five hits and one run in seven innings in his first home win since his July 30 trade from the Cubs. San Diego took a 1-0 lead on Logan Forsythe's third-inning homer, a fly ball that hit the net on the fair side of the left field foul pole and barely cleared the wall. Forsythe stopped running before second base, apparently believing the ball was foul. Volquez, who leads the majors with 86 walks, walked Uggla to open the second. Juan Francisco followed with a double, sending Uggla to third, but the Braves could not score. Uggla was thrown out at the plate by first baseman Yonder Alonso on Brian McCann's grounder. Paul Janish hit a popup and Maholm struck out. Uggla's three-run homer off Volquez was a line-drive shot that quickly reached the left-field seats. The homer by Uggla saved the inning for the Braves after Martin Prado was caught in a run down between third base and home on Freddie Freeman's grounder to Volquez. Uggla's homer drove in Heyward, who doubled, and Freeman. Atlanta added three runs in the fourth. Michael Bourn's groundout drove in Janish, who was hit by a pitch. Heyward's two-run double to center pushed the lead to 6-1 and knocked Volquez out of the game. Chad Durbin and Cory Gearrin each pitched a scoreless inning behind Maholm. NOTES: The Padres are 3-3 with one game remaining on their seven-game road trip. ... Fans chanted ''Bobby! BP Unfiltered: Ben Sheets' Dead Body by Ben Lindbergh

Every pitcher goes through the occasional "dead arm" period, most often early in the season. But when you've spent 345 career days (and two entire seasons) on the disabled list, the way Ben Sheets has, you need a stronger way to describe it: After Sheets gave up five runs in six innings Sunday night against the Mets, broadcasters suggested he might be experiencing...

Chipper's big night puts fans on their feet

The last time I wrote about Chipper Jones for doing something other than contributing to the demise of the English language with his "Twitta!" account, he had just gone 5-for-5 and been selected to his final NL All-Star team. He's had plenty of big moments since early July and has continued to amaze Braves fans with his exploits at the grand old age of 40. And when...

Chipper Jones homered twice on a night when a big crowd turned out to get his bobblehead, and the Atlanta Braves won their 15th straight game with Kris Medlen as a starter, beating the San Diego Padres 6-0 on Thursday. OPS Fantasy Leagues: OPS… Heyward Did It Again

Here are some updates on guys I covered earlier in the year and where I expect them to be for the rest of the season: Jason Heyward – He no longer drives me crazy. Right Said Fredi Gonzalez caused him to have a toxic season last year, but he’s rebounded nicely in 2012. He’s been more aggressive this year, with the highest swinging percentage of his career. This has resulted...

What You Need to Know: Friday, August 17 by Daniel Rathman

The Thursday Takeaway When Tommy Hanson returns from the disabled list to pitch tonight’s series opener against the Dodgers, he will complete the Braves’ six-man rotation, an approach manager Fredi Gonzalez intends to employ for the rest of the month in an effort to foster both health and competition among his starters. Come September, one member of the sextet will be relegated...

Padres Might’ve Scored If Not For That Medlen Kid

You know how when you turn on the lights in my bedroom, the cockroaches scatter?  Well, maybe you didn’t know.  Okay, say Hodgepadres are the cockroaches and the lights are from any stadium but Petco.  You following the analogy?  Good, let’s add another layer.  Now, I lay my pillow down on my Kinko’s-made, Michael J. Fox Teen Beat pillow case and I’m at peace with the...

While it may be his farewell season, Chipper Jones is prepared to make his long goodbye last into October. The veteran slugger tries to build on one of his best games of the season Friday night when the Atlanta Braves open a three-game series versus the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers. The 40-year-old Jones was slowed by injuries earlier this season and has adjusted his workload...
