Braves right-hander Brandon Beachy will make his first start in more than a year on Monday night against Colorado as he completes his comeback from elbow surgery. The Braves confirmed Sunday that Beachy will come off the disabled list for his first start since right elbow ligament-replacement surgery in June 2012. Manager Fredi Gonzalez says Beachy probably will be limited to about 100 pitches. Gonzalez says Beachy's return to the rotation ''is like getting a big piece in a trade at deadline.'' Beachy moves into Tim Hudson's rotation spot. Hudson's season ended when he broke his right ankle on Wednesday night. Beachy was 5-5, led the NL with a 2.00 ERA, and appeared bound for an All-Star appearance when his 2012 season ended after 13 starts.

Braves' Beachy struggles in return, still on track

ATLANTA -- Before Brandon Beachy took the mound Monday night, Braves general manager Frank Wren sat atop the navy-blue padded backing of the home dugout's bench discussing deadline deals, offensive improvement and team health. Eventually talk shifted to Beachy, who made his first major league start since undergoing Tommy John surgery last June. Wren, looking rather energetic...

Three Key Atlanta Braves Coming Down the Stretch

An Uggla hot streak would seal the regular season deal The Atlanta Braves have opened up an eight game lead in the National League East race, but the season is far from over.  So who are the three players that are key the rest of the season and into the playoffs? Even before Tim Hudson‘s injury, I considered Brandon Beachy to be a key this season.  Beachy was one of the top pitchers...

The Untouchables: Remodeled Braves ‘pen still dominant

O’Flaherty/Kimbrel/Venters in 2011-2012:  1.79 ERA and .197 opposing AVG in 417 inns. Through the past two seasons, Atlanta’s bullpen dominance was driven by the trio of closer Craig Kimbrel and late-inning lefties Johnny Venters and Eric O’Flaherty. From the start of 2011 through the end of the 2012 season, the trio of Kimbrel, Venters & O’Flaherty combined for a 1...

Three Cuts: Braves rally late, clinch sweep of Cards

ATLANTA Here are three things we learned from the Braves' 5-2 victory over the Cardinals (62-40), clinching a sweep of the National League's premier club, record-wise. 1. The Braves are now viable threats for landing the top spot in the NL playoffs Yes, it's still July; and yes, Atlanta only has an 8 12-game lead over Washington (winners of three straight). But with...

Welcome back, Beachy! (and more)

So glad this Beachy's finally coming back. The AJC has a nice article on him out this morning... Beachy excited for Monday return For Beachy, Monday might feel a little like making his major league debut all over again. Only this time he’s actually had a lot more anticipation. Beachy broke into the majors on Sept. 20, 2010 in Philadelphia, not knowing if he was even going to...

Andrelton Simmons provides clutch double in Braves 2-0 win over Cardinals

It may have been late July but the series between NL division leaders St. Louis and Atlanta has all the feel of post season baseball. Both teams had good pitching performances, holding each other hit-less though the seventh with runners in scoring position. Cardinals pitcher Joe Kelly pitched into the seventh before parting ways after a fly-ball gaffe by left fielder Matt Holliday...

Braves take series opener vs. Cardinals

It wasn’t exactly redemption but it would have to do. The Braves hosted the Cardinals on Friday night without the drama of a one-game Wild Card playoff and an infield fly called 225 feet from home plate to rile up the masses but they walked away 4-1 winners over the team with the best record in baseball in front of a packed house. A sellout crowd of 50124 — only the third sellout...

Beachy struggles, but Braves overcome big deficit and win on Simmons’ walkoff triple

It had been more than 13 months since Brandon Beachy pitched in the major leagues. And much longer since the Braves right-hander had given up seven runs in a game. As in never in his big-league career. While Beachy’s first game back since Tommy John elbow surgery was hardly a rousing success Monday night his teammates picked him up twice erasing Colorado leads — including an...
