Manager Fredi Gonzalez and the Braves training staff are taking no chances on lingering injuries this season. That is the residue of last September's collapse, caused in part by catcher Brian McCann's weak offense after coming back too soon from a strained left oblique. So when right-fielder Jason Heyward woke up Monday morning with a tender right oblique, there was no question he'd be out of the lineup. Obliques were an issue for the Braves all last season from the beginning of the season. From right-hander Jair Jurrjens though right-hander Brandon Beachy, centerfielder Nate McLouth, first baseman Freddie Freeman to McCann, the strained oblique was the injury du jour. Third baseman Chipper Jones's surgically repaired left knee will be a topic all this season. He and Gonzalez knew that going into the season and they are managing games accordingly; Jones calls Gonzalez every morning to let him know whether he can play. But Jones is a veteran who knows his body tho...

Hudson's solid return leads Braves to win

Tim Hudson's fastball wasn't great. His sinker sometimes stunk. His cutter didn't always do what he wanted. None of that mattered on Sunday. It was a great day for Hudson. Seven months to the day after his last big league start which ended in a season-ending loss to the Phillies -- and five months after back surgery, Hudson returned to a big league mound. It wasn...

Game Day Pictures: Braves vs Pirates 4-27-12

Our pretty Beachy "stretching" during batting practice Cousin Catherine and I went to the game Friday, had a super-awesome time. The picture above is the best one I snagged, but I'll post a few more below. Everyone was pretty scattered today! Rossy laughing. EO hat. HUDDY! Kimmie's cute grin. I swear, it looks like Meds can see my lens pointed at him from all the...

Braves 4, Pirates 3

Tim Hudson survived five tough innings to win in his return from offseason back surgery and the Atlanta Braves held on in the ninth to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 on Sunday. Hudson (1-0) pitched in the majors for the first time since his operation last November to repair a herniated disc. The right-hander threw 96 pitches while giving up two runs on six hits and two walks. He...

Braves give up two runs in 8th, fall to Phillies

ATLANTA (AP) -- John Mayberry Jr. doubled and scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves 4-2 on Tuesday night in the first meeting of the season between the NL East rivals. After Brandon Beachy gave up only two runs in seven innings to outlast Phillies starter Cole Hamels, the Phillies broke a 2-2 tie with two runs against...

Phillies 4, Braves 2

ATLANTA -- If it's the Phillies, then it seems the Braves have to start right-hander Brandon Beachy. And he still hasn't beaten them, after the Phillies broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the eighth inning Tuesday, winning the game 4-2. Beachy drew the Phils four times in 2011, and had the 0-1 record and 4.58 ERA to show for it. He was not buying the premise that continually...

Phillies-Braves Preview

The last time Philadelphia and Atlanta met, the Phillies left the field victorious and ready to begin the playoffs. The Braves walked off stunned that they would be missing the postseason after holding a seemingly insurmountable wild-card lead just weeks earlier. Atlanta and Philadelphia open a three-game series Tuesday night at Turner Field, the site where the Phillies eliminated...
