The Atlanta Braves are moving to a six-man rotation for two weeks. Manager Fredi Gonzalez says he'll pick the best five starters at the end of August. The Braves created a surplus in their rotation last month by trading for Paul Maholm, signing Ben Sheets and moving Kris Medlen from the bullpen. Right-hander Tommy Hanson, who leads Atlanta with 12 wins, returns from the disabled list this week and will start on Friday against the Dodgers. Medlen is 2-0 while allowing only three earned runs in three starts. Gonzalez says Medlen will stick in the rotation if his success continues. Sheets is 4-2 with a 2.13 ERA in six starts in his comeback from elbow surgery. The six-man rotation includes Tim Hudson, Mike Minor, Maholm, Sheets, Medlen and Hanson.

BP Unfiltered: Ben Sheets' Dead Body by Ben Lindbergh

Every pitcher goes through the occasional "dead arm" period, most often early in the season. But when you've spent 345 career days (and two entire seasons) on the disabled list, the way Ben Sheets has, you need a stronger way to describe it: After Sheets gave up five runs in six innings Sunday night against the Mets, broadcasters suggested he might be experiencing...

The Braves are in a stretch of playing 20 consecutive days before a day off on Aug. 30. ''After that, we're going with five,'' Gonzalez said. ''Somebody is going to have to go to the bullpen...

Pre-Game: Atlanta Braves (66-47) @ New York Mets (54-60)

Let’s just say that Johan’s first start off the DL was not a successful one. That was one über ugly performance. Johan’s last three starts against the Braves have been just awful. 1 1/3 innings and 8 runs, 5 innings 6 runs, 1 1/3 innings 6 runs (4 earned). For some unknown reason, ESPN/MLB has decided that this game is so big that it has been moved to an 8pm start. Luckily...
